FORT JACKSON, S.C. -- After more than two decades in the Army, Master Sgt. Keith Green still hasn't had enough.
He said his goal is to be a command sergeant major before retiring, Green said.
Born and raised in Panama, Green said he treasures the educational and personal development that the Army has afforded him.
"The opportunity that has been given to me is immeasurable."
Green said new recruits and young Soldiers should take their roles in the military seriously.
"Stay focused on the real reason you came to the military," he said. "It gave us the opportunity to defend this country, and we should honor that. We should not take that responsibility lightly."
During Green's career, he has been assigned to Fort Stewart, Ga.; Fort Bragg, N.C.; Camp Humphreys, Korea; Fort Campbell, Ky.; Fort Hood, Texas; and a now closed installation at Darmstadt, Germany.
He has also done two tours in Iraq.
Green said a lot of leaders and mentors, influenced his growth as a Soldier and NCO.
Among them is Command Sgt. Maj. Karl Schmitt of the 171st Infantry Brigade. Green said he first met Schmitt when he was stationed at Fort Hood.
"He was a first sergeant at Fort Hood," Green said of Schmitt. "He took me under his wing, and he gave me the opportunity to lead."
Green is also looking forward to the opportunity to give back to his community at a more grassroots level and help others who might be in need.
"Hopefully, I will open my own business, something to do with medical assistance, assisted living."
We salute you!
