PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - The annual charity season begins here with a Combined Federal Campaign kick-off ceremony at the Tin Barn 3:45 p.m. Oct. 27.

CFC is the only campaign authorized in the federal work place and covers about 2,400 charities in the United States.

The mission of the CFC is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.

Nearly four million federal employees and military personnel are able to contribute to the charities of their choice during the annual charity drive, according to the National CFC Committee Web site.

Pledges made by federal civilian, postal and military donors during the campaign season support eligible non-profit organizations that provide health- and human-service benefits throughout the world.

Locally, the campaign, which runs through Dec. 8, benefits agencies on post, such as the Presidio of Monterey's Army Community Service Food Locker Program, Better Opportunities for Single Servicemembers and Youth and School Age Services, said POM CFC Coordinator Liz Clark.

And, outside the military gates, she said, examples of local organizations include the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation, Big Brothers and Big Sister of Monterey County, Boys and Girls Club of Monterey, Meals on Wheels and many more for a total of around 100.

Assisting the effort this year is Presidio of Monterey Garrison Commander Col. Darcy A. Brewer who volunteered to be the local federal campaign chairman, said Clark, "which means he's responsible for overall coordination of the entire Monterey and Santa Cruz CFC campaign - about 30 organizations, including NPS and us."

On average, some one in four federal employees or their dependents will benefit from the CFC charities this year, according to CFC officials. Donors may designate which charities receive their money by filling out a pledge card.
