Fort Knox, Ky. — Fort Knox’s official trick-or-treating hours are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.
To ensure a safe environment for all families, Fort Knox Police will conduct active roving patrols throughout residential areas and enforce speed limits strictly via radar.
The following guidelines have been consolidated from the American Academy of Pediatrics, Red Cross, Fort Knox Directorate of Emergency Services and Fort Knox Safety Office to keep the community safe.
Costume planning checklist:
Prioritize visibility and movement when preparing your child's costume. Use the guidelines below to prevent common hazards before heading out.
- Visibility: Choose bright, reflective costumes or add reflective tape to outfits and treat bags. Carry flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and escorts.
- Mobility: Ensure costumes are short enough to prevent tripping. Verify that shoes fit well and rain gear is light-colored.
- Eyesight: Use non-toxic makeup and secure hats instead of masks, which can obstruct a child's field of vision.
- Fire Safety: Purchase only costumes, wigs and accessories labeled as flame-resistant.
- Accessories: Avoid sharp or excessively long swords, canes or sticks to prevent self-injury during trips or falls.
Rules for the trick-or-treat trail
Maintain situational awareness on the street. Follow these operational safety rules while navigating Fort Knox neighborhoods.
- Supervision: A parent or responsible adult must accompany children at all times.
- Navigation: Remain on well-lit streets, use sidewalks and never cut through yards or alleys. Walk facing traffic at the road's edge if no sidewalk exists.
- Crossing: Cross streets only as a group at established crosswalks. Never step out between parked cars or from driveways.
- Traffic awareness: Do not assume the right of way. Drivers may struggle to see pedestrians. Confirm all traffic has stopped before crossing.
- Interacting: Only visit homes with porch lights turned on. Never enter a home or a vehicle for a treat.
- Weather/communications: Carry a cell phone for emergencies. In a thunderstorm, immediately seek shelter in a sturdy building or closed vehicle.
Key post-event protocol
- Crucial inspection rule: An adult must inspect all treats at home before allowing children to consume them.
