FORT CARSON, Colo. — The Fort Carson Fire Department (FCFD) is gearing up to host a series of community events for Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-9, 2026, to promote installation-wide safety and bolster home preparedness across the Mountain Post.

Designed to connect emergency responders directly with service members, Families and civilians, the week’s schedule blends hands-on engagement with essential household safety education.

“We want the community to meet our fire professionals and know we’re here to serve them,” said Andrew Carrick, assistant fire chief for Fort Carson Fire and Emergency Services.

On select mornings throughout the week, Sparky the Fire Dog will greet commuters arriving onto the installation at Gates 1, 5 and 20. Sparky and firefighters will also visit a different school on post each morning to give students an enthusiastic welcome to the school day.

For midday shoppers, fire professionals will have an information table at the Fort Carson Exchange every day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., answering questions and distributing swag and safety resources.

Tuesday through Thursday from 5-7 p.m. firefighters will cruise through on-post neighborhoods in a fire truck delivering dinner orders alongside Domino’s Pizza. Randomly selected community members who order will have the entire cost of their pizzas covered by Domino’s if they allow Fort Carson fire crews to conduct a brief, on-the-spot check of their home smoke alarm systems.

Later in the week, fire personnel will read “Fire Truck to the Rescue” by Elena Ulyeza and “Flash the Little Fire Engine” by Pam Calzert to young children and parents during Storytime at Grant Library Oct. 8 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

While these scheduled events offer plenty of excitement, they also serve as the launchpad for this year’s national Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Fort Carson fire professionals will urge community members to adopt smart charging habits for everyday rechargeable devices — such as smartphones, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters. Powered by compact lithium-ion batteries that store immense amounts of energy, these devices pose serious hazards if damaged, charged incorrectly or paired with incompatible cords, with risks ranging from extreme overheating to fires and small explosions.

The week also reinforces everyday vigilance at home.

“Having a home safety plan before a fire happens is really important. Families should talk about how they will get out and where they will meet,” Carrick stressed.

Being prepared also pays dividends when first responders arrive.

“People knowing what to communicate to firefighters when they arrive on scene helps fire rescue professionals respond more efficiently,” said Carrick.

Beyond the annual week of activities, FCFD remains committed to year-round education.

“We can teach individual or group classes about fire safety,” Carrick said.
