FORT LEE, Va. – The Chief of the Bundeswehr (German Army) Joint Support Command visited U.S. Combined Arms Support Command Sept. 22 to view Army sustainment training, education and institutional capabilities while strengthening multinational partnerships.
Lt. Gen. Gerald Funke arrived on Fort Lee and received a CASCOM and schools overview at the headquarters. Afterwards, the general delivered an information brief on the Joint Support Command, which activated on Oct. 1, 2024.
The Bundeswehr Joint Support Command is a central support formation of the German Bundeswehr, responsible for logistics, medical services, CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) defense, military policing, and multinational integration, ensuring the operational readiness and sustainability of German armed forces.
"If Bundeswehr forces are to be survivable, they require well-equipped support forces,” Funke said on the Bundeswehr official website. “Our capabilities make deterrence credible and ensure the warfighting capability of the Bundeswehr."
According to the website, Bundeswehr logistics is essential to the sustainable operational readiness of the armed forces. It ensures an adequate supply of materiel, ammunition, fuel and rations; provides transport and protection to the troops; and helps to maintain the war-fighting capability of the armed forces through state-of-the-art maintenance services.
Operating under the umbrella of the Bundeswehr Joint Support Command, Bundeswehr logistics personnel are closely connected not only with the Services but also with Germany’s multinational partners within NATO.
After the briefings, Funke concluded his visit with a tour of the Joint Mortuary Affairs Department to gain an understanding of how the U.S. military handles deceased Soldiers in the deployed environment.
During his time in the U.S., Funke is also visiting locations in the National Capitol Region and Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.
