Retired officers team wins Garrison Scramble

Team entry in Saturday’s annual Garrison Scramble was like having a golden ticket for Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The Links had a waiting list.

By early that morning, there were 30 four-person teams with 120 golfers and another six teams on the waiting list. They ended up with 31 teams and 123 golfers for the four-person scramble on the Warrior course on a sunny day.

“Another fun day at the golf course,” Abbey Pederson, assistant business manager and head golf professional at the Links, said after giving pre-tournament instructions and sending the golfers on their way in the carts.

A team of retired Army officers won by scorecard playoff with a 16-under 56. The winning foursome included retired Lt. Col. Scott Coy, retired Lt. Col. Eric Post, retired Col. Dave Warnick and retired Lt. Col. Jeff Wishik.

“We were able to play complementary golf,” Post said. “No one really stood out, so we all contributed to the team score.”

The second-place team, also with 56, included Sandy Parks, Mike Hunter, Luis Saca and Steve Olander. Parks had the long drive. Tyler Sherwood had the closest-to-the-pin.

“It’s a great tournament to kickoff the fall season of school and football, and the lovely weather for fall golf,” Pederson said.

Next up is the Superintendent’s Revenge and Chili Cookoff, Nov. 7, a popular annual fall tournament and social event, with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. It will probably again be on the Warrior course.

“It’s technically a four-person scramble but there’s lots of obstacles out there,” Pederson said. “It’s not easy, it’s very difficult.”
