REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (Aug. 24, 2026) – For Lt. Col. Hassan M. Kamara, the mission was clear as he assumed his new role as military deputy for the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center.
Kamara said his focus is supporting the workforce and enabling leadership during the ongoing organizational transition.
“Of course, we're committed to the mission, but it is the people who accomplish the mission. If you're taking good care of your people, they will help you accomplish the mission," Kamara said.
Kamara had always planned to become a foreign service officer for the State Department upon his graduation from Arizona State University. However, with the onset of the Iraq War in March 2003, he felt called to enlist in the Army.
What began as a four-year enlistment quickly turned into a lifelong career. Encouraged by his leadership, Kamara attended Officer Candidate School and commissioned in 2005. His early career included service with the 10th Mountain Division and the 1st Armored Division, eventually leading to a company command in Iraq in 2010. Over his career, he has completed three deployments, serving with distinction and gaining invaluable leadership experience on the ground.
From serving on the U.S. Forces Korea Joint Staff to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, his military career has taken Kamara and his family across the globe.
The Center is not Kamara’s first time in the Rocket City. He received an assignment to Redstone Arsenal in 2015, where he was introduced to the missiles, space and fires portfolios. His expertise and leadership potential led him to serve on the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Strategic Studies Group. Following that, he spearheaded the establishment of public-private training and education partnerships for the Acquisition Support Center and served as the Assistant Executive Officer to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology.
He managed the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor, or LTAMDS -- the radar system slated to replace the Patriot radar -- from 2023 to 2025. Recently selected for promotion to colonel, Kamara came to the Center directly from the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks.
Outside of the office, Kamara’s free time isn’t so free; he has five children and prioritizes family time, whether they are out riding bikes or playing in the backyard.
As he settles into his role, Kamara recognizes that periods of change can be turbulent, but that he will be a strong advocate for workforce engagement and empathetic leadership.
“At the end of the day, an organization is its people. I think one of the big things in leadership is having that empathy and care for your people.”
