INTRODUCTION

The modern battlefield has fundamentally changed, becoming a transparent and hyper-lethal environment where persistent sensors and long-range precision fires have blurred the traditional lines of combat. Observations from the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) show that for brigade combat teams (BCTs) to succeed, they must proactively dominate their deep operational areas before close-combat maneuver begins. This shift requires a new approach, as waiting for higher echelons to shape the deep fight is no longer a viable strategy in large-scale combat operations (LSCO).

Although the widespread availability of commercial unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) offers commanders a revolutionary view of the battlespace, technology alone is not a panacea for success. In contested environments characterized by aggressive electronic warfare (EW), complex terrain, and sophisticated air defenses, technology often fails when it is needed most. An over-reliance on these autonomous systems creates significant vulnerabilities, proving that they cannot overcome the inherent friction of advanced threat environments on their own.

To achieve victory, BCTs must master the synthesis of human expertise with autonomous technology. This is accomplished by turning staff procedures into a lethal advantage through disciplined, friction-based rehearsals and maintaining lean, efficient battle rhythms. The most critical element is the deliberate fusion of resilient staff processes with skilled human sensors, such as joint fire support specialists, who can complement and validate autonomous platforms. By integrating resilient human observation with intelligent technology, BCTs can win the crucial battle of sensors and shooters and dominate the future fight.
