TOBYHANNA ARMY DEPOT, Pa. — With the traditional passing of the unit colors, Sgt. Maj. Cory P. Alkire took the helm as Tobyhanna Army Depot’s (TYAD's) senior enlisted advisor, pledging to champion workforce quality of life and sustain world-class readiness for the joint warfighter.
Alkire assumed responsibility during a ceremony on July 28. The event was presided over by Depot Commander Col. Benjamin L. Kilgore and was also attended by CECOM Command Sergeant Major Jay A. High, depot leadership as well as family and friends of Sgt. Maj. Alkire.
As sergeant major, Alkire serves as the voice of the warfighters who depend on Tobyhanna Army Depot for full lifecycle support of their C5ISR equipment. He also counsels the commander on matters relating to soldiers, military families, and the depot workforce.
In his remarks during the ceremony, Kilgore noted the importance of Sergeants Major. to the Army and its people.
“They are the standard-bearers, the keepers of tradition, and the true pulse of the organization. A sergeant major serves as the vital bridge between the commander's intent and the organization’s execution. They are the fiercest advocates for welfare, training, and readiness,” adding that Alkire is a prime candidate for the position.
“Sgt. Maj. Alkire is uniquely suited to lead this team. He doesn't just know Tobyhanna on paper. He knows us as a deployed soldier who has personally used our equipment to sustain operations in demanding environments. He knows the heavy weight of our responsibility because his life, and the lives of his soldiers, have depended directly on it.”
During his first address to Team Tobyhanna, Alkire expressed excitement and enthusiasm for the opportunity to lead Tobyhanna’s world class workforce.
“Each time I have turned to a TYAD expert for assistance, their response has been swift, accurate, and right on time. Throughout the annals of time, Tobyhanna has maintained a reputation of quiet professionalism, excellence in the face of adversity, and a forward leaning attention to the future,” he noted.
Alkire also emphasized that his primary role is to serve the people of Tobyhanna.
“As I step into this role, my commitment to you is straightforward: I am here to serve you. The depot Sergeant Major is the advocate for the workforce, and I intend to be just that. I will be your biggest champion, working alongside Col. Kilgore to ensure this incredible team, comprised of the artisans, engineers, logisticians, and support staff, has what it needs to continue executing our mission with the quiet professionalism we are known for.”
Tobyhanna Army Depot is designated as the Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, electronics, avionics, and missile guidance and control. TYAD provides cradle-to-grave lifecycle support through depot-level repair, systems integration, software and cyber engineering, and field support.
A key enabler of operational readiness for joint and allied forces globally, TYAD leverages new and emerging technologies to further expand the Department of War’s organic capabilities for microelectronics, secure communications infrastructure, unmanned aerial systems, joint all-domain command and control, integrated air and missile defense and the Army’s Next Generation Combat Systems.
TYAD’s ability to rapidly surge production, deploy field support teams and scale for contingency or theater-level operations makes it a vital contributor to strategic readiness and operational reach.
