Synopsis
This article presents the "Ground-Air Screen Bounding Cycle," a critical methodology for integrating small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) with ground reconnaissance teams. In today's sensor-saturated battlefield, scout sections face constant threats from enemy drones and precision fires. Treating drones as merely episodic tools creates dangerous gaps in observation and slows momentum.
The proposed solution is a deliberate four-step process—clear, occupy, secure, and establish—that synchronizes air and ground maneuver. In this cycle, the drone clears terrain ahead while scouts provide security. The scouts then advance to the cleared position under the drone's protective overwatch. This transforms the sUAS into a co-equal partner, creating continuous, layered observation. By using this repeatable method, scout sections extend their observation depth, maintain operational tempo, and drastically enhance survivability. This allows them to see without being seen, dominate the environment, and provide commanders with a decisive information advantage.
