JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska — In the days leading up to Memorial Day, Spartan Paratroopers stood shoulder to shoulder in silence to honor 77 fallen members of the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 11th Airborne Division, whose sacrifice continues to shape the formation today. The Spartan Remembrance Ceremony, held May 19, 2026, at the brigade headquarters memorial, brought together Paratroopers, Gold Star Families and Spartan alumni to remember friends, leaders and brothers-in-arms whose legacy remains deeply rooted within the brigade.
For many in attendance, the memorial was more than a ceremony. It was a reminder that the Spartan legacy was built through sacrifice. Generations of Spartan Paratroopers answered the nation’s call in combat operations around the world, and some never returned home. One by one, the names of the fallen were read aloud by battalion leaders from across the brigade. Each name represented more than a loss to the Army. They represented lives cut short, families forever changed and teammates still remembered in deployment stories, airborne operations and quiet conversations between Paratroopers.
Gold Star Families stood alongside today’s Paratroopers as the brigade paused to reflect on the cost of service. For younger Soldiers in formation, many of whom never personally knew the fallen, the ceremony served as a reminder of the profession they have entered and the sacrifices carried by those who came before them.
The 11th Airborne Division’s Arctic mission demands disciplined Soldiers prepared to operate in some of the harshest environments in the world. But behind every airborne operation, field exercise and deployment is the understanding that today’s readiness was built on the sacrifice of those who served before.
For the Spartans, remembrance is not confined to a single day on the calendar.
It lives in memorial walls, unit history and the expectation that every Paratrooper who joins the formation will uphold the standard left behind by the fallen.
As Memorial Day approaches, the Spartan brigade continues forward carrying the memory of its fallen Paratroopers, not only as names etched into stone, but as part of the foundation of the unit itself.
