Synopsis

This paper explores Ukraine's innovative use of low-cost acoustic monitoring networks, such as "Sky Fortress," Zvook, and FENEK, to detect and respond to unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and first-person view (FPV) attack drones. It evaluates the operational effectiveness of these systems in Ukraine, which utilize thousands of passive sensors to identify drone signatures and cue local defenses, significantly enhancing early warning and response capabilities as well as argues for the U.S. to adopt similar acoustic technologies along NATO’s Eastern Flank Deterrence Line (EFDL) and in the Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) to bolster air defense against low-altitude threats.
