Wierzbięcice tram line reopens April 2 with free citywide service
Public transport in Poznań is set for a major boost as trams officially return to the rebuilt Wierzbięcice junction on April 2, marking a significant milestone completed three months ahead of schedule.
After just five months of intensive construction — much of it during challenging winter conditions — tram traffic will once again flow between Matyi Street and Wilda. The reopening restores a key connection in the city’s network, improving travel between the southern districts and the city center. Lines 6, 10, 12, and 18 will resume service through the upgraded junction, helping ease detours caused by ongoing infrastructure works elsewhere.
The project included a full reconstruction of tracks, installation of new overhead lines, and the use of innovative prefabricated components to accelerate progress. Night-time test runs have already confirmed that the new infrastructure is ready for passenger service.
Although trams will pass through the junction starting April 2, they will not yet stop within the intersection itself, as additional work continues in the area.
At the same time, the city has introduced an eye-catching and passenger-friendly addition to the network — a special free tram service. A uniquely branded “Red Bull” tram, based on a Moderus Beta vehicle, began operating earlier this week and will run until April 12.
This free line travels between Starołęka PKM and the city center, stopping at all stations along the route. Importantly, no tickets are required, as the rides are fully funded by the organizer. The service operates multiple times a day on weekdays and weekends, offering both residents and visitors a convenient and cost-free way to explore the city.
Together, the early reopening of the Wierzbięcice junction and the launch of the free tram line highlight Poznań’s ongoing efforts to modernize its transport system while making it more accessible and passenger friendly.
Poznań airport adds flights to Zurich, Canary Islands
Poznań–Ławica Airport is entering a new phase of dynamic growth, strengthening its position on the European aviation map with the launch of a prestigious connection to Zurich and the announcement of a brand-new winter route to Gran Canaria. These developments not only expand travel opportunities for passengers from the Wielkopolska region but also significantly improve the airport’s international accessibility for business and tourism.
Direct Link to a Major European Hub
On March 29, Poznań-Ławica welcomed the first-ever flight operated by Swiss International Air Lines, marking the inauguration of a direct connection between Poznań and Zurich. This new route operates three times a week — on Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays — and will remain available throughout the summer season until October 22, 2026.
The launch of this connection represents a major step forward for the region. Zurich is not only Switzerland’s largest city but also one of Europe’s leading financial and economic centers. More importantly for travelers, Zurich Airport serves as a key hub within the Lufthansa Group network, offering seamless connections to dozens of destinations worldwide.
Thanks to this new route, passengers from Poznań gain convenient access to long-haul and intercontinental flights, including destinations such as New York, Chicago, Miami, Singapore, and Hong Kong, as well as numerous cities across Europe, Africa, and South America. This significantly reduces travel time and eliminates the need for complicated transfers via other Polish or European airports.
The connection is expected to be particularly valuable for business travelers, given the strong and long-standing economic ties between Wielkopolska and Switzerland. At the same time, it opens new opportunities for tourism and visiting friends and relatives, while also making Poznań more accessible to international visitors and investors.
A Boost for Regional Development
The introduction of Swiss flights is widely seen as a milestone for both the airport and the region. It enhances Poznań’s competitiveness as a destination for investment, work, and tourism, while reinforcing its integration into global transport networks.
As part of the Lufthansa Group and a member of the Star Alliance, Swiss brings not only a high standard of service but also access to one of the most extensive airline networks in the world. The airline operates a modern fleet and is actively investing in more sustainable aviation solutions, including the use of alternative fuels and emissions reduction strategies.
The Zurich route complements existing connections from Poznań, including flights via Frankfurt, creating a broader and more flexible travel offer. Altogether, passengers now benefit from an increasingly diverse and efficient flight network.
Sun-Seekers Gain a New Winter Escape
While the Zurich connection strengthens business and global travel, another newly announced route focuses on leisure and tourism. Starting October 26, passengers will be able to fly directly from Poznań to Gran Canaria, one of the most diverse islands in the Canary archipelago.
The route will be operated by airBaltic twice a week — on Mondays and Fridays — throughout the winter season. Flights are scheduled at convenient times, allowing travelers to plan both longer holidays and short getaways, including extended weekend trips.
Gran Canaria has long been a favorite destination for Europeans seeking sunshine during colder months. Known for its year-round mild climate, with temperatures rarely dropping below 20°C, the island offers a wide variety of landscapes — from sandy beaches and dunes in Maspalomas to lush valleys and dramatic volcanic cliffs. Visitors can enjoy both relaxation and active pursuits such as hiking, sightseeing, and exploring charming towns.
The introduction of this route responds directly to growing demand from passengers in the region, who have been increasingly interested in direct flights to warm, long-haul destinations during autumn and winter.
Modern Travel Experience
Flights to Gran Canaria will be operated using modern Airbus A220-300 aircraft, known for their quiet operation and enhanced passenger comfort. This is particularly important for airports like Poznań-Ławica, which operate under strict environmental regulations.
Additionally, airBaltic is among the first European airlines to introduce high-speed onboard internet powered by Starlink technology, already available on a significant portion of its fleet. This innovation further improves the travel experience, allowing passengers to stay connected even during long flights.
A Growing Network of Destinations
The new connections to Zurich and Gran Canaria are part of a broader expansion of Poznań-Ławica’s route network. In 2026, the airport will offer flights to nearly 50 destinations across 26 countries, served by both traditional and low-cost carriers.
This growing network reflects the airport’s rising importance in international passenger traffic and its ability to adapt to changing market demands. While some routes have been discontinued compared to previous years, several new destinations have been added, ensuring a balanced and attractive offer for travelers.
In addition to regular flights, the airport continues to serve numerous charter connections, particularly to popular holiday destinations in the Mediterranean, as well as more exotic such as Zanzibar, Vietnam, and Thailand.
A Strong Future Ahead
The launch of the Zurich connection and the introduction of direct flights to Gran Canaria clearly demonstrate that Poznań-Ławica Airport is evolving into a key regional gateway with both global reach and strong leisure appeal.
By combining improved access to major international hubs with attractive holiday destinations, the airport is meeting the diverse needs of modern travelers. At the same time, it plays a crucial role in supporting the economic growth and international visibility of Poznań and the wider Wielkopolska region.
As new routes continue to be developed, passengers can expect even greater connectivity, convenience, and choice in the years to come.
Poznań facility to offer rare public tour
It is not normally accessible to residents.
The Poznań Waste Incinerator, or rather the Municipal Waste Thermal Treatment Plant, will open to residents on April 11th. The open day is being organized by the city in cooperation with PreZero Zielona Energia. Anyone interested will be able to visit the facility, which is not normally open to the public. First admission is scheduled for 9:00 AM, and last admission is at 1:30 PM.
"Tours are available after registering in advance using the registration form. Registration is required for a specific time slot. Space is limited. A maximum of four people can be registered per email address. Confirmation will be sent to the email address provided during registration. Visitors to the incinerator must be at least 7 years old. The organizers also request that visitors wear flat-soled shoes," the organizers explain.
As part of the tour, participants will see how the incinerator operates. The entire tour lasts about an hour. "They will be able to enter the unloading hall, see the waste bunker, and observe the operation of the operator of a huge, several-ton waste grab," they add.
