GRAFENWÖHR, Germany – Maintainers across the 41st Field Artillery Brigade put their technical expertise, endurance and tactical proficiency to the test during a rigorous Maintenance Best by Test competition designed to reinforce one mission above all: readiness.
The competition opened with a written test covering doctrine, technical manuals, troubleshooting procedures and safety standards. The exam evaluated not only individual knowledge, but also the ability to apply maintenance principles under pressure, a critical component of sustaining equipment readiness in real world operations.
From there, competitors laced up for a six mile ruck march, demonstrating the physical endurance required of Army maintainers. While their daily mission centers on equipment, maintainers remain Soldiers first, expected to operate in austere environments, move with their formations and support operations wherever the mission demands.
The final phase featured a confidence course composed of four lanes where Soldiers executed a variety of maintenance tasks under timed conditions. Competitors diagnosed faults, conducted services, identified vehicle deficiencies and performed vehicle recovery operations. Each lane replicated realistic maintenance scenarios, reinforcing the technical proficiency and attention to detail required to keep platforms mission capable.
“The maintenance lanes consist of common issues we have experienced in the past during field training exercises,” said 2nd Lt. Mercer Love, who serves as the Maintenance Control Officer for 589th Brigade Support Battalion. “The intent is to provide realistic training so next time we encounter these issues in a field training exercise, we can execute efficiently.”
Maintenance readiness directly impacts operational readiness. Every vehicle, weapon system, and piece of equipment that is properly inspected, serviced and repaired ensures commanders maintain freedom of maneuver and combat power. Events like the brigade's "Best by Test" strengthen confidence across the formation by validating the expertise and resilience of the Soldiers who sustain it.
