Paratroopers awarded Purple Heart

Sgt. David Vogel (l.), from Company D, 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, shakes the hand of Maj. Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, after being awarded the Purple Heart medal during a ceremony Sept. 23 on Forward Operating Base Salerno, located in the Khost Province of eastern Afghanistan. Additionally, Vogel received a second Purple Heart for a separate incident where he was struck in the face by enemy small arms fire.
