REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. — Army Materiel Command successfully met its retention goals for fiscal year 2025, reinforcing the Army’s operational strength by keeping its most capable and experienced Soldiers in uniform.

The achievement reflects a strategic push led by Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy J. Sellers, AMC’s senior enlisted advisor, to prioritize readiness, talent management and warfighter support.

Sellers emphasized that retaining top-performing Soldiers is essential to sustaining the Army’s ability to respond to global threats and support combat operations.

“Retention isn’t just about numbers, it’s about keeping the right Soldiers in the fight,” said Sellers, AMC’s 18th Command Sergeant Major since January 2023. “Every reenlistment strengthens our formations and ensures our warfighters have the support they need to win.”

Central to success is the AMC Enterprise Retention Team led by Sgt. Maj. Melissa Torres, AMC’s senior command career counselor. Torres played a key role in aligning retention efforts with the Army’s broader mission, ensuring that Soldiers with critical skills and leadership potential remain part of the force. Her work has helped streamline reenlistment processes, improve counseling outreach and reinforce the connection between career development and combat readiness.

“Our mission is clear, to sustain the warfighter,” said Torres. “As a uniquely structured and geographically dispersed command, AMC faces a demanding operational landscape. In this environment, retaining the best Soldiers - those who are trained, motivated and ready to lead - is not just important, it is essential.”

Torres said retention teams across the enterprise worked together.

“Their work is amplified by the support of leadership at every echelon of command. Together, we ensure that AMC remains a force of excellence, resilience and readiness,” Torres said.

The command accomplished its retention goals just ahead of the 2025 AMC Career Counselor of the Year competition held the week of Sept. 8. The event brought the top career counselors and retention NCOs from across AMC to compete in a series of challenges, including the Army Fitness Test, a written exam, a mystery event and culminated with the Career Counselor of the Year Board.

AMC named Sgt. 1st Class Mark Tollefson, Army Sustainment Command, its career counselor of the year. Tollefson will represent AMC at next April’s Army-level competition.

As AMC continues to lead the way in retention innovation, its efforts serve a critical purpose, ensuring that the Army’s warfighters are backed by a force of experienced, committed and capable Soldiers ready to meet any challenge, said Torres.
