JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. – Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Madigan Gate, located at I-5 Exit 122 (Berkeley Street), will be closed for construction from Oct. 28 until approximately late January 2026 for replacement/relocation of the active barriers and pavement reconstruction at the gate house area. During the project, the Logistics Gate at Exit 122B will be open 24/7.
“This is an Office of the Provost Marshal General-funded modernization project,” said Ted Solonar, JBLM Emergency Services officer and deputy director of Emergency Services. “Really, the biggest thing for the installation is it’s going to replace the protective barriers that are beyond 20 years old.”
Such barriers typically have an approximately 10-year life cycle. The project will include digging out the old barriers and placing new ones farther into the base, aligning with military installation standards.
The project’s timing was determined by funding, and all gated military installations will eventually undergo such modernization projects. The Office of the Provost Marshal General looked at the qualifying installations to determine “where they could get the most opportunity for the money that they were given” this year, Solonar said.
Madigan Gate was selected “because the over-arching infrastructure is still really good – it’s just the barriers that are the problem,” he said. “They could do that relatively inexpensively compared to a complete rebuild of the gate.”
During the closure, ambulances at the Logistics Gate will bypass traffic on the way to Madigan Army Medical Center, just as they currently do at the Madigan Gate.
The process for people driving to MAMC’s emergency room with medical emergencies will remain the same at other gates, too.
When they get to the gate, they should “tell the guard they’re having a medical emergency and we’ll send an ambulance out,” Solonar said.
During the construction period, it is highly recommended that drivers consider alternate gates and start practicing their daily commutes to work well before the planned date of closure.
