SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. — Vinitha V. Nair, a transportation specialist with the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command’s 831st Transportation Battalion, has been named a recipient of the 2024 Louis Dellamonica Award for Outstanding Army Materiel Command Personnel of the Year.
The award recognizes military and civilian employees below the rank of general officer and Senior Executive Service level who demonstrate exceptional performance and contributions to AMC’s mission.
Nair was selected for her role in supporting strategic transportation operations across multiple theaters, including Operations Spartan Shield, Inherent Resolve, Poseidon Archer and Prosperity Guardian. She served as the primary liaison between the battalion and a range of tactical, strategic and commercial shipping partners.
As an ordering officer for seven U.S. Transportation Command-administered contracts valued at more than $73 million, Nair’s oversight resulted in approximately $1.1 million in cost avoidance. Her invoice audits and fiscal management practices led to the denial of $600,000 in erroneous charges on a single contract.
In addition to her contracting responsibilities, Nair mentored 32 soldiers and civilians in an organization with an 85% annual turnover rate. Her training efforts supported the redeployment of 119 units and the movement of more than 4,000 pieces of cargo through eight strategic seaports in five countries.
She also maintained situational awareness for more than 6,800 import items transiting through seven countries and 12 seaports, assisting 246 customers in navigating host nation customs procedures.
The 831st is one of two battalions within SDDC’s 595th Transportation Brigade that support the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
Nair was the first foreign-hire civilian from the 595th to attend a course at the Army Sustainment University. She later developed and delivered a follow-on course for personnel unable to attend in person.
She will be formally recognized at AMC’s Dellamonica Awards ceremony in later this month.
