Army Community Service staff held a Volunteer Recruitment Fair on Aug. 21 to help recruit volunteers for various organizations in need of assistance.

Maria Pangborn, Volunteer Coordinator, said the event was held as an effort to recruit volunteers not just for the White Sands Missile Range community but to encourage volunteering in general.

“This is a great event to give community members information about volunteering opportunities and encourage community involvement and giving back,” Pangborn said.

Pangborn said they had some outside agencies from the Las Cruces area in attendance to offer additional resources for those who don’t live at WSMR.

Also present were representatives from Bell Gym, the Religious Support Office, Outdoor Recreation, Child and Youth Services Sports, the Post Library, and the Post Theater.

Some of the organizations in great need of volunteers include the Post Theater, which depends on volunteers to keep it open, Outdoor Recreation and Bell Gym are also in need of volunteers.

Pangborn said volunteering is a great way to give back and to learn new skills. It is also a great way to network and make connections with potential employers. It is also a great way to add experience on your resume and college application.

She said she is also looking to recruit more youth volunteers who can start volunteering at age 14.

Pangborn said there is also a mental health aspect to volunteering. She said it is a good way for single service members to stay busy and connected to their community, especially during the holidays.

Pam Rodgers, the Volunteer Coordinator for Ambercare Hospice, said they are looking for volunteers to offer companionship to patients who have been given six months or less to live. She said volunteers can read to patients, watch movies with them, or just spend some quality time with them in their last days. She said they are also in need of volunteers to help with veteran pinning ceremonies and Vet-to-Vet Cafes.
