WIESBADEN, Germany – Don’t leave home without it was a popular ad slogan for one credit card company back in the day, but that thought can now be applied to all forms of credit or debit cards when visiting an Army Post Office beginning Aug. 1. That’s when cash will no longer be accepted at postal service centers for financial transactions.

In addition, checks and money order cashing will no longer be accepted either, and the purchase of money orders will require a debit card.

The cashless initiative supports IMCOM-Europe’s commitment to improving operational efficiency, reducing financial risk, and modernizing services across the postal network, said Gabe Telles, IMCOM-E Postal Operations Program Manager.

“This change, based on results from a pilot program at USAG Wiesbaden earlier this summer, will result in faster service and shorter wait times for customers,” said Telles. “It also provides enhanced transaction security and accountability.”

Aside from benefits to the customer, Telles added the process also simplifies postal financial audits for postal employees – freeing up more time for them to focus on customer service needs.

“It’s a win-win,” he said. “It all comes down to streamlining processes to enhance services and programs as part of bettering the overall quality of life overseas and providing world-class services to our mission partners and their units and the Soldiers, Family Members, Civilians, and retirees serving in Europe”
