FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — Fort Leonard Wood’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Outdoor Adventure Center is partnering with the Missouri Department of Conservation to bring a basic flatwater kayaking workshop to the installation from 5 to 6:30 p.m. July 14 at Bloodland Lake.

FMWR Marketing Manager Nia Dickinson said the partnership with MDC will give the Fort Leonard Wood community the opportunity to benefit from the additional outdoor opportunities to be offered as well as their expertise.

“The kayaking course is great for those who haven’t kayaked before and want to try it out in a safe environment while gaining valuable resources and pointers,” she said.

During this event, participants will learn information and safety about kayaking during an on-land portion of the class, then take to the water for paddling instruction and practice.

“In Missouri, floating down streams and paddling around lakes are fantastic ways to enjoy the state’s great outdoors,” said Dwight Warnke, MDC conservation educator and program instructor. “Whether your passion is angling, keeping an eye out for elusive wildlife, or simply drifting downstream with the current, a day on the water will definitely lift your spirits.”

Registration is required and limited to 16 participants, but a second workshop can be added if needed. Individuals must have access to Fort Leonard Wood. The workshop is open to participants aged 13 and older — those younger than 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Kayaks, paddles and life jackets will be provided. Close-toed shoes are required.

To register, visit https://mdc.mo.gov/PrivateEvents and enter the private workshop code: 354D. Registration can also be done at the Fort Leonard Wood OAC.
