June 14 marks the 250th birthday of the United States Army. Established on June 14, 1775, by the Continental Congress, the Army is a year older than the Declaration of Independence and 13 years older than the Constitution.

As Gen. George Washington, the Army’s first commander in chief, accepted his commission to lead a united colonial fighting force, he knew he would be leading an Army that was lacking equipment, rations, ammunition, uniforms and training. However, he and about 48,000 colonists, from all walks of life, united in the same goal – to fight and win. This goal has carried through from Washington’s Army of colonist to today’s Army, a professional cadre of Soldiers and civilians, all who remember our first battle cry, ‘This we’ll defend’.

Our Army is the best trained and most prepared in the world, making it ready to face any obstacle it may encounter, including natural disasters, public health emergencies and our nation’s adversaries. The Army helps create a sense of purpose through personal growth and professional development – empowering Soldiers and civilian employees to be part of something greater than themselves and to be all they can be.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary, let us recognize the unwavering dedication and sacrifice of the men and women of the U.S. Army. Their commitment to duty, their professionalism, and their embodiment of the Army values makes them an indispensable asset to our nation’s defense and a source of immense pride.

Happy birthday, Army! This we’ll defend!
