TOBYHANNA, PA – Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD) celebrated the opening of a state-of-the-art Microelectronics Facility, June 5, marking a significant investment in the Nation’s organic industrial base and enhancing the Depot’s capabilities to support critical weapon systems. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by representatives from across the Department of Defense, including Maj. Gen. John T. Reim, Joint Program Executive Officer for Armaments and Ammunition.

This new facility expands Tobyhanna’s capacity to produce surface mounted electronic assemblies – the vital “brains” behind many of our Nation’s most advanced defense technologies. The facility is equipped with cutting-edge automated assembly and testing equipment, allowing for increased production speed, enhanced quality control, and reduced reliance on external vendors.

“This facility represents a crucial step in strengthening the Army’s ability to rapidly respond to evolving warfighter needs,” said Reim. “By bringing this capability in-house, TYAD is ensuring a more resilient and responsive supply chain for critical components.”

The Microelectronics Facility is a key element in rebuilding the Arsenal of Democracy, reinforcing the United States’ ability to produce essential defense technologies domestically. It also embodies the principle of peace through strength, ensuring that the U.S. military remains equipped with the most advanced and reliable systems to deter aggression and maintain global stability.

The new facility provides the organic industrial base with a unique capability to support numerous munitions programs across the JPEO Armaments & Ammunition portfolio. Tobyhanna’s ability to execute critical electronics work will provide increased flexibility and responsiveness in supporting the Army Transformation Initiative. By enhancing domestic production capabilities, the facility contributes to a credible deterrent to would-be adversaries, signaling that the U.S. is prepared to defend its interests and allies with speed and precision. Lastly, the Microelectronics Facility will provide the Army with an additional supply source for strategic requirements that are unique for military application.

The new Microelectronics Facility underscores Tobyhanna Army Depot’s commitment to innovation and its role as a critical hub for organic industrial base modernization. This investment strengthens national security and provides valuable workforce development opportunities and continued growth within the local community.
