ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, IL – Rock Island Arsenal was recognized by the Quad Cities Riverfront Council Tuesday during a meeting held at historic Quarters 1 on the island.
A certificate of appreciation was accepted by U.S. Army Garrison Rock Island Arsenal commander, Col. Joe Parker on behalf of the installation efforts in support of the senior commander priorities to be an integral part of the Quad Cities.
The certificate read, “For their efforts to enhance riverfront recreation, tourism, cultural resources, and transportation in the Quad Cities, specifically the opening for public rental their vast assortment of recreational items, their renovation of the Arsenal Museum, and the construction of the new roundabout at the foot of Arsenal Bridge in Davenport.”
RIA has a waiver from the Department of Defense that opens their Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Category B and C activities to the local community. This includes the RIA Golf Course, Arsenal Auto, Outdoor Recreation and the Leisure Travel Office.
“Being an integral part of the Quad Cities is one of our key tasks in support of our Senior Commander priorities,” says Parker. “We’re doing everything we can to get the word out that the Arsenal is open and we welcome the community to visit the installation and take part in all the activities we have available.”
While the installation is still required to maintain security, gaining access to the Arsenal only takes minutes for most community members. With a Real ID, or two forms of ID if you don’t have yours yet, and knowing your social security number you can get a pass to visit the island that will be good for a year at the Visitor Welcome Center located just outside the Moline gate of the installation.
This opens up a wide variety of activities available to visitors including those mentioned in the certificate as well as the Rock Island National Cemetery, Col. Davenport House historical site and the Corps of Engineers Mississippi River Visitor Center located at Lock 15.
Whether a trip though time for a history fix or you’re looking to rent a pop-up camper for that summer vacation, take a look at what the Arsenal has to offer to not only those that live and work on the island, but the entire Quad Cities community.
