WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. (May 21, 2025) – The heart of the White Sands Missile Range community was on full display as residents gathered on May 20 for the Volunteer Recognition Ceremony, honoring the selfless contributions of local volunteers.

Held at the Frontier Club Ballroom, the event drew a large crowd eager to express appreciation for those who dedicate their time and energy to bettering the community. White Sands Missile Range Commander Brig. Gen. George Turner and White Sands Missile Range Garrison Commander Col. Donyeill Mozer heralded the impact of volunteerism in various community programs, with praising speeches highlighting these individuals' significant roles.

"We are privileged to recognize 27 priceless volunteers for their hard work and dedication during calendar year 2024," said Turner. "Volunteers at Bataan Memorial Death March. Priceless. Volunteers at the Trinity Site Open House. Priceless. Volunteers at the movie theater. Priceless. Volunteers at the school. Priceless."

As Turner continued to address the audience, he shared that, "the strength of White Sands Missile Range lies in its military, civilian and family members. Moreover, the strength of our community lies in the hearts of our volunteers."

As Maria Pangborn, Army Volunteer Coordinator for the White Sands Army Community Services, called out each volunteer, applause and cheers filled the room, showcasing the gratitude felt by all in attendance.

Several volunteers were awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award based on their volunteer hours for the year. The Bronze Award is given for 100-249 hours of service, the Silver Award for 250-499 hours, and the Gold Award for 500 or more hours of service within a calendar year.

Additionally, two significant honors were presented: the 2024 Volunteer of the Year Award, selected by a blind panel based on nominations, and the 2024 June Bisbey Volunteer Angel of the Year Award, given to an individual recognized for their dedication to the spirit of volunteerism in the community.

Top Honors include:

  • Cristina Ruiz, 2024 Volunteer of the Year and Bronze President's Volunteer Service Award
  • James "JT" Thomas, 2024 June Bisbey Volunteer Angel of the Year Award and Gold President's Volunteer Service Award
  • Kelly-Anne Dowers, Silver President's Volunteer Service Award
  • Spc. Charlie Ruffin, Bronze President's Volunteer Service Award
  • Jonathan Behr, Bronze President's Volunteer Service Award

The ceremony concluded with unity and inspiration, as community members left carrying the spirit of volunteerism forward, eager to continue supporting one another in the days ahead.
