FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — In recognition of National Military Spouse Appreciation Day, the Fort Leonard Wood Army Community Service team is inviting military spouses to an open house event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 9 at ACS, Bldg. 486, on Replacement Avenue.

National Military Spouse Appreciation Day, commonly referred to as Military Spouses Day, is celebrated the Friday before Mother's Day, and was established in 1984 to recognize the commitment and sacrifice of the spouses of those who serve the U.S. Armed Forces.

“This is a time to say thank you and recognize the spouses who stay behind to take care of the family, maintain the home, support each other and allow the service member to focus on being mission ready,” said Shawn Steen, ACS chief. “We are honored to be able to show them appreciation for everything they do.”

According to Steen, the event will also showcase information tents from various organizations across the installation and opportunities to learn more about ACS.

Steen said the event is an opportunity for the spouses to stop by and relax. The event will provide opportunities for spouses to plant flowers or paint, participate in outdoor games, and win door prizes. Light refreshments will be available as well.

While this event is focused on spouse appreciation, Steen noted ACS staff members are available daily to offer tools to support the challenges of military family life.

He said ACS offers a variety of services to include parenting; interactive play groups; resiliency training; stress management; networking; information and referral; volunteer information; financial counseling; budgeting; overseas orientation and deployment information.

“Spouses new to the military may be on their own for the first time, feel overwhelmed and miles away from home,” Steen noted. “Our ACS programs provide a great opportunity to connect spouses to what the Fort Leonard Wood community has to offer.”
