PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - Thanks to the efforts of local Girl Scout Troops 98861 and 98283, more than 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies will be distributed to military housing residents at Picatinny Arsenal during the month of May in observance of National Military Appreciation Month.
The cookies were donated to soldiers assigned to the garrison’s Religious Support Office last week. Two non-commissioned officers, along with the garrison’s Chaplain, Lt. Col. Joseph Lawhorn, met with the scouts and are coordinating with the installation’s Housing Office to distribute boxes to military residents throughout the community.
The Chaplain, and religious support specialists Sgt. 1st Class Randy McKire Jr., and Staff Sgt. Tisha Rivera, received the cookies as part of the Girl Scouts “Cookies from Home” program.
When Girl Scouts take orders or make sales through cookie booths, customers can designate purchases as donations towards the program, in which cookies are later delivered to designated recipients.
National Military Appreciation Month is observed in May each year to honor and recognize the contributions and sacrifices of those who serve or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Congress designated May as this month in 1999. It's a time to show gratitude and appreciation for military personnel, veterans, and their families.
In 2024, Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey donated more than 95,000 Girl Scout Cookie packages to local non-profit organizations, emergency services, front-line healthcare and other workers, food pantries, and more, through the Cookies from Home program.
Girl Scouts of the United States of America, commonly known simply as Girl Scouts, is a youth organization for girls in the United States and girls living abroad. It was founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912, a year after she had met Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of scouting.
