FORT BRAGG, N.C. – A unique event recently took place at the Fort Bragg Exchange, where Soldiers had the opportunity to face off against the 16th Sergeant Major of the Army, Michael A. Grinston, in a friendly competition, while also supporting Army Emergency Relief efforts.

The event was initiated by Grinston and his team, who reached out to AER and the Exchange for support, allowing the event to align with AER’s mission to provide financial assistance to Soldiers and their families.

The goal of the event was simple: beat the SMA in a three-point shooting challenge. The crowd’s excitement was evident, and while the SMA proved to be a strong competitor, a young Soldier came out on top, outshooting the SMA in what turned out to be a thrilling match.

“The event was absolutely amazing,” Alexandra Dewberry, General Manager Admin/Supervisor at the Fort Bragg Exchange, said. “Grinston is incredibly engaged with the Soldiers and is well-liked by everyone who was there. He took the time to interact with each participant, signing shoes and guitars, creating an unforgettable moment for our young Soldiers.”

Beyond the competition itself, the event was a significant moment of connection for the Soldiers who participated. The opportunity to engage with such a high-ranking leader in a relaxed, fun atmosphere meant a lot to those involved, providing a sense of community and encouragement.

With a fun challenge and important cause at the heart of the event, it’s clear that initiatives like these strengthen bonds between Soldiers and leadership, all while contributing to the Army's tagline of "Be All You Can Be."
