A group of White Sands Missile Range employees presented several ideas to the command group during the first Garrison Shark Tank event April 2 in the Command Conference Room.

WSMR Commander Brig. Gen. George Turner said the purpose of the event was to discuss ideas on improving business practices and quality of life across the installation.

“These individuals today gave us five ideas that help us get to that mission. We appreciate them.”

Congratulations to the five presenters.

Michael Williams took first place for his Small Modular Reactor idea. His concept includes deploying a Small Modular Reactor at WSMR to provide resilient, secure, and sustainable power for WSMR, Fort Bliss and Holloman Air Force Base, reducing reliance on external grids and enhancing operational energy security. The next step is to have a feasibility study.

Cory Prough took second place for his Fire Department Vehicle Maintenance idea. His concept includes creating an inter-governmental service agreement with El Paso Fire Department to provide service for issues that cannot be resolved within 7 days. Currently, fire department vehicles requiring maintenance/repairs remain out of service at LRC 30-60 days. Longer for major repairs. This concept would reduce downtime by 50 percent.

Deborah Nethers took third place for her Water Wise Aquifer Savers idea. Her concept includes reducing potable water use for greenspace irrigation by reusing well water, improving irrigation by keeping trees, removing grass, and installing artificial turf.

Summer Irvin took fourth place for her Permanent Outdoor Entertainment Venue. Her concept includes building a permanent stage/entertainment structure at Desert Emerald Park that would allow the installation to utilize this resource for change of command ceremonies, special events, and private events that require space, visual appeal, and need the area to accommodate more people than a facility with a cap on number of attendees.

Chance McCormack took fifth place for his WSMR Airport Shuttle Service idea. His concept includes having Outdoor Recreation offer shuttle service to and from the El Paso Airport. The service would be based on staff availability.

Turner also thanked Josie Tate and Ed Stahl for coordinating the event.

Stahl said that Garrison put out a call to the directors and they did their own internal Garrison Shark Tank session where twenty ideas were pitched for the Garrison Command team. Of those five were chosen to move on to the next level.

He said participants were asked to pitch an idea or a concept to help improve Garrison support or services to the mission.
