Social media has become a major part of teenage life, shaping how young people connect, interact, communicate and form relationships. While these platforms offer opportunities for creativity, expression and connection, they also provide an arena for harassment and bullying behaviors, pseudo personalities and exposure to unique challenges such as teen dating violence.
Teen dating violence has extended into the digital realm. Teens in relationships may use social media to monitor, control or intimidate their partners. These harassing and abusive behaviors can significantly impact the teens’ mental health and overall well-being. Teens who experience dating violence may struggle with issues such as anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. This can also lead to absenteeism, poor grades, drug and alcohol abuse and even suicide.
Abuse or violence in teen relationships can also lead to adult relationship problems, such as domestic abuse and sexual violence. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teens who experience dating violence face an increased risk of similar abuse that can “last a lifetime.”
Warning signs include depression, drug and alcohol use, becoming antisocial, exhibiting the same abusive behaviors toward others, excessive texting, social media surveillance and public shaming.
