PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. – Beginning May 7, anyone 18 years or older attempting to enter Picatinny Arsenal or other U.S. military installations will need to present a valid REAL ID unless you present a valid DoD Common Access Card (CAC), U.S. passport, or other cards issued through the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System (DEERS).
REAL IDs are a new version of state-issued identification cards, such as driver’s licenses, that will be required to access both federal installations and facilities, as well as to fly aboard a federally regulated commercial aircraft.
A stand-alone driver’s license issued through a state’s Department of Motor Vehicles is not acceptable without one of the previously listed documents. The goal in implementing the REAL ID Act is to create an additional vetting system.
The enhanced security measure is part of the REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, which enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the federal government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.”
The Act established minimum security standards for license issuance and production. It also prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states that don’t meet the Act’s minimum standards.
For information on how to obtain a REAL ID, visit your state’s driver’s licensing agency website to learn what documents are required to obtain a REAL ID.
At a minimum, you may be required to provide documentation showing: 1) Full Legal Name; 2) Date of Birth; 3) Social Security Number; 4) Two Proofs of Address of Principal Residence; and 5) Lawful presence in the United States.
According to the website of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, a REAL ID must first be obtained in person at an appointment and costs $35.
