Legends of Toruń's Old Town on a mural

The mural on Podmurna Street depicting legendary figures related to the contemporary history of Toruń's Old Town was officially unveiled on Thursday, March 6, 2025 .

- Today we are officially showing the work of Mr. Jakub Machowski. It is a small piece of the contemporary history of Toruń. All the regulars of the old town will get to know the characters immortalized in the mural - said the deputy mayor of Toruń, Adam Szponka. - The city is alive, it is developing, it has a continuation and among this beautiful Gothic that we can see, among the Art Nouveau tenement houses or the Prussian wall, we also have a bit of modernity, i.e. a mural that presents the recent history of the city.

The mural presents figures known from the recent history of Toruń's Old Town: Andrzej Langer - "Głos starówki", Wojciech Wiśniewski, who advertises the Toruń brewery by pulling a barrel and Mr. Marek playing spoons in Toruń's Old Town. The project consists of 3 parts painted using graffiti technique on the walls of buildings surrounding the niche. The graphic memory also includes a flower seller from the Caesar's Arch.

- I think that this new mural in the old town is a place that integrates the local community, residents, but also tourists - said Łukasz Drygalski, director of the Toruń City Center Office. - This is a new, cool tourist attraction in the city on the Toruń mural trail. We have immortalized characters who are inextricably linked to this place.

- For me, these are iconic figures from the Toruń landscape. They are not actors or politicians, although they are people known to everyone, or to most residents, who have positive associations. Hearing the voice of Mr. Andrzej Langer or seeing Mr. Wojtek pulling a large barrel, people smiled, they introduced a lot of positive vibe - says the author of the mural, Jakub Machowski. - The work itself was to be presented in such a way that the faces best reflected the character of these figures and the composition was a complete whole with various characteristic elements: in the case of Mr. Andrzej, it was a loudspeaker, a more dynamic composition with Mr. Wojtek and a characteristic barrel, and a third wall on which there is a collective composition, also presenting a few other characters, such as Mr. Mareczek, who played the spoons a few years ago and has not been seen for years, a lady who has been selling lilies of the valley under the Arcades for years, and a third person.

Andrzej Langer "The Voice of the Old Town" was a living advertisement for Toruń's gastronomic establishments. His characteristic and loud voice pierced through the streets of Toruń without a megaphone. Probably everyone who visited the old town during the season a few years ago knows him. His voice can still be heard on MZK buses when we approach the Plac św. Katarzyny stop.

"Mr. Wojtek" or Wojciech Wiśniewski advertises a Toruń restaurant and brewery by pulling a cart with a barrel in a characteristic period costume. We can still meet him on the streets of Toruń. Associated by residents and tourists, he has become a part of the landscape of the old town.

- This is nothing more than a reminder of history - said one of the heroes of the mural "Mr. Wojtek", Wojciech Wiśniewski. - You can see that the mural was made by an artist painter, not some amateur.

Mr. Marek – "Łyżkarz" is a street performer, a daredevil, a bard. His vocal performances accompanied by two table spoons are well remembered by connoisseurs of the nightlife of the Toruń Old Town. For many seasons, he has made himself known as a performer of well-known hits, in unconventional arrangements for spoons and voice.

The mural was created by Jakub Machowski – a graphic designer with 25 years of artistic experience, a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at NCU and the Artistic Study in Computer Graphics. Author of over 600 graphics, specializing in portraits made using the graffiti method.
