Of the roughly 3,000 patriotic Americans among the ranks of Tobyhanna Army Depot’s (TYAD) civilian workforce, TYAD Public Works Division Chief Amalia Thomas and Work Order Coordinator Nicolle DePeters have been named the latest TYAD Employees of the Quarter.

Thomas and DePeters, who both hail from the depot’s Installation Services Directorate, were honored in the senior and junior category, respectively. Both employees’ successes are indicative of the spirit of warrior ethos present among Team Tobyhanna.

In nominating Thomas for the honor, Division Chief Jim Wisnewski said extreme ownership is not just a buzz term to Thomas. Instead, it’s a guiding principle through which she holds herself to the standards necessary to achieve mission success and lead others to success as well.

“Amalia has championed the concept of "extreme ownership" throughout her tenure, proactively solving problems inherent to military construction programming with poise and determination,” said Wisnewski.

“Amalia embodies the six Army Values in Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage on a daily basis, evidenced throughout the work she does on behalf of the depot.”

Recent efforts spearheaded by Thomas have resulted in higher headquarters approval of key projects to Tobyhanna. These include leading preparation efforts for the semi-annual Installation Real Property Master Planning Board, briefing the TYAD primary team leadership on the proposed Public Works Division work plan, assisting with Mission Modernization efforts in preparation of the October War Game, and sharing her knowledge with colleagues on the ongoing utilities replacement project.

Thomas has also shown the ability to lead. Specifically, Wisnewski called out her efforts in recent organizational transitions.

“Amalia has demonstrated an unparalleled level of initiative throughout both the recent local Depot level transition within D/IS in standing up a Planning Branch, and the ongoing AMC level transition of TYAD to the IMCOM Directorate of Sustainment hierarchy,” said Wisnewski, adding that her dedication and drive to achieve organizational and personal goals are invaluable to TYAD operating at peak efficiency.

Thomas showed humility in accepting the honor, crediting leadership for creating an environment in which she can thrive.

“I am incredibly grateful and humbled to be named an Employee of the Quarter. This recognition is truly a testament to the incredible support and leadership I've received during my time at TYAD,” said Thomas.

“From day one, I've been granted opportunities to grow and learn, allowing me to build the confidence needed to tackle complex projects and contribute to TYAD's vital mission.”

In a crucial time for modernization and restoration at Tobyhanna, Thomas is as committed as ever to advancing TYAD and its mission of providing readiness to our nation’s warfighters.

“I deeply care about the well-being of TYAD as a whole – from our dedicated employees and the soldiers who call this place home, to the upkeep of our facilities,” said Thomas.

“This award is a tremendous honor, and it motivates me to continue striving for excellence in service to our installation.”

DePeters is at the heart of the operation to keep the depot functioning at maximum efficiency. As a Work Order Coordinator in the Public Works Division, DePeters processes over 10,000 work orders annually. She coordinates with supervisors from across the depot to facilitate the completion of both demand and preventative maintenance work orders.

A driving force behind resolving a plethora of situations, DePeters has developed a high level of rapport with leadership across the depot and prides herself on resolving issues as quickly and effectively as possible.

DePeters is the epitome of a team player. So much so, that she recently volunteered to assume the duties of the FEMS Administrator in addition to her role as Work Order Coordinator. Due to her previous service as the Management Assistant for Engineering Branch, DePeters continues to perform various support functions for the branch. She also volunteered to serve as the Combined Federal Campaign keyperson for the Public Works Division.

Wisnewski nominated DePeters as well. He said she has excelled in both roles while developing herself professionally and personally in the process.

“Nicolle has admirably fulfilled the duties of both positions for the majority of the first quarter fiscal year 2025, and she continues to demonstrate an exceptional level of disciplined initiative in continuing to learn and develop herself in both the FEMS Administrator position and the Work Order Coordinator position,” said Wisnewski.

Recent examples of DePeters’ work directly impacting organizational efficiency include coordinating contractor base access with TYAD Security and processing background checks and ELTY 648-C Forms on behalf of Engineering Branch as well as leading recent development and implementation efforts to improve demand maintenance work order tracking in Installation Status Reporting (ISR) by assigning a prefix to each individual work order based on the nature of the work to be performed.

Wisnewski said that change “directly enabled the Public Works Division to sort FEMS data rapidly and facilitate prompt and accurate reporting in ISR.”

DePeters said she appreciates the recognition and that this only further inspires her to continue to strive for excellence personally and organizationally.

“This recognition has not only validated my past contributions but has also inspired a forward-looking mindset focused on continuous improvement and achievement.”
