TOBYHANNA ARMY DEPOT, PA --- A second Soldier has been honored as Tobyhanna Army Depot’s (TYAD) Outstanding Active-Duty Servicemember during a recent community event in northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA).

Selected from a group of nominations submitted by active-duty and reserve units operating in the NEPA region, Staff Sgt. John T. Hogan of the 5th Brigade (Signal Corps) 102nd Division (Maneuver Support) embodies the Warrior Ethos of the United States Army, always placing mission first.

“I have a lot of family and people in my community that have served,” said Hogan about what influenced his decision to enlist, adding that he saw a career with the U.S. Army as an opportunity to improve himself.

In the summer of 2009, John T. Hogan enlisted with the U.S. Army as a Satellite Communications System Operator-Maintainer and attended basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia.

Staff Sgt. Hogan has deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of national defense and has earned numerous accolades for his service with the U.S. Army from 2009 through 2018, when he transitioned to the U.S. Army Reserve, based out of Scranton, Pennsylvania. His expertise within the 25S Satellite Communications Systems Operator-Maintainer and 25U Signal Operations Support Specialist military occupational specialties (MOS) led to Staff Sgt. Hogan being hand-selected into the Active Guard Reserve program.

Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Soldiers are stationed at thousands of Army Reserve units throughout the United States and allow Soldiers transitioning off active duty the opportunity to compete for AGR positions closer to home. Staff Sgt. Hogan’s appointment to the AGR program opened the door for him to join the faculty of the High Tech Regional Training Site – Maintenance (HTRTS-M) Tobyhanna schoolhouse as an instructor, where he provides training to Soldiers that are transitioning to the 25S and 25U MOS, and performs quality assurance, ensuring the curriculum meets U.S. Army standards.

“Staff Sgt. Hogan’s contributions to the HTRTS-M Tobyhanna include facilitating hundreds of hours of training, with a 100% graduation rate for his pupils,” said Ken Aten, Executive Officer of the schoolhouse quartered at Tobyhanna Army Depot. “He is exemplary in his dedication to the mission and to the growth of his Soldiers, thus contributing to maintaining the readiness of the operational force.”

Aten added that through his methods, Staff Sgt. Hogan has given vital insight to the schoolhouse instructors by demonstrating the issues Soldiers are most likely to encounter on the battlefront when operating the communication electronics systems they rely on to carry out their mission.

In addition to his official duties, Staff Sgt. Hogan has volunteered at the food pantry of the local church in Tobyhanna.

“Community support is important to me because it fosters a sense of purpose and belonging,” said Hogan.

Staff Sgt. Hogan was named the second of Tobyhanna’s Outstanding Active-Duty Servicemembers during a ceremony following the first period of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey team’s Military Appreciation Night game on Feb. 15. Col. James L. Crocker, Commander of Tobyhanna Army Depot, presented Hogan with a bronze statue and Certificate of Achievement for his military accomplishments and contributions to the community.

The president of the Tobyhanna Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) presented Staff Sgt. Hogan with the AUSA’s Distinguished Service Award along with a complimentary two-year membership to the association.

“I am honored to receive this award,” said Staff Sgt. Hogan. “It motivates me in my decision to continue to serve, and I hope others are encouraged to get involved as well.”

The Outstanding Active-Duty Servicemember award was established to commit anew to the depot’s longstanding tradition of celebrating the relationship between the workforce at TYAD and the service members they support. To be considered for the award, unit leaders must demonstrate the ways their candidates selflessly dedicate themselves to the defense of the United States, live in alignment with the Army core values and are dedicated to supporting the growth and prosperity of their communities.
