On Feb. 17, we celebrate the life and legacy of America’s first president, George Washington on Presidents Day. His leadership was instrumental during the Revolutionary War as well as for the beginning of our great nation. George Washington’s birthday was recognized as an official federal holiday in 1879, and in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moving the holiday to the third Monday in February.

Every leader and supervisor should ensure that their teams are taken care of. We should never underestimate the impact and influence sound leadership has when our service members, civilians and family members are away on leave or away from his or her unit. Prior to this holiday weekend, all leaders should discuss safety and risk mitigation with those in their care.

Inclement winter weather remains a major risk this time of year. Talk to your teams about plans, travel and prepare for potential inclement weather, environmental, and road conditions. We must always be prepared for severe weather by checking the forecast frequently and keeping extra supplies in your homes and vehicles in case of emergencies.

Never drive under the influence of alcohol, distracted, or drowsy. Obey speed limits, buckle up, phone down, and remain focused on the task at hand. Before traveling you should check the Destructive Weather Mitigation Operations program (DWMO) or the Fort Leonard Wood Weather and Hazardous Conditions page, which is updated at 4 a.m. every day year-round.

Let’s make this George Washington’s Birthday a safe and memorable one for everyone! We are proud of every member of the Fort Leonard Wood team, and we wish you all a happy holiday weekend.
