WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. (February 4, 2025) - Recognizing exceptional employee support and dedication, the New Mexico Employer Support Group of the Guard and Reserve proudly awarded the Patriot Award to Zoe Aguirre, the Acting Range Operations Director at White Sands Missile Range, on Jan. 22.

The award comes from the Office of the Secretary of Defense to recognize those who support national security and protect liberty and freedom by promoting employee participation in America's National Guard and Reserve Force.

Aguirre was unaware of the award until Chris Wright from the Employer Support Group presented it to her. Addressing her team, Aguirre said, "Thank you very much; this really got me by surprise. It was a surprise. I never expected this. I have no words."

Eder Contreras, a Mission Controller at White Sands Missile Range and a Navy reservist, nominated Aguirre for her outstanding support during his recent deployment. Being gone since 2022, Contreras faced the challenges of balancing his military responsibilities with his civilian career. Upon his return to civilian life, he took a moment to recognize Aguirre's invaluable assistance throughout his deployment.

"Zoe has been my supervisor for nine years. The first mobilization she supported was back in 2020, I got called up as a reservist to help out with the Navy's SurgeMain program, which was all about tackling the shipyard maintenance backlog that built up during the COVID-19 pandemic. For that mobilization I was gone for 10 months," said Contreras. "Then in 2022 I was recalled once again to support the Navy Reserve Center in El Paso as the Admin. Chief and Mobilization Officer."

During Contreras' time away, Aguirre was critical in maintaining team cohesion and operational efficiency. She provided Contreras with regular updates on mission developments, changes in requirements, and other relevant information. These consistent communications allowed him to stay informed and engaged with the team despite the physical distance and demands of his service.

Contreras deeply appreciated her efforts, which not only helped him feel connected to his colleagues but also ensured a smooth transition back into his civilian role.

"I want to thank Zoe personally for letting me do what I did. I was gone for a long time, but you guys were still able to manage juggling personnel around," said Contreras. "I appreciate you guys, and I appreciate you, Zoe. Thank you."
