On December 20th, Joint Program Executive Officer for Armaments & Ammunition (JPEO A&A) approved entry of the M1147 120mm Advanced Multi-Purpose (AMP) round into Full Rate Production, marking a significant step in filling a critical requirement for the Army. This decision authorizes the production of this round beyond Low-Rate Initial Production and is crucial to meeting the ammunition demands for both the Army and our international partners.

The M1147 provides M1 Abrams Tank crew members with new capabilities to defeat Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) teams and Breach Double Reinforced Concrete Walls (DRCW) while consolidating the capabilities of four legacy rounds into one. This is accomplished through the use of a multi-mode programmable fuze that enables the ability to select from three modes of operation including point detonate, point detonate delay, and airburst.

“Approval of Full Rate Production for the M1147 AMP round is a significant achievement, representing years of dedication by our team and our commitment to equipping Soldiers with the best ammunition,” said Maj. Gen. John T. Reim, JPEO A&A. “As we continue to produce this advanced round, the M1147 will play a crucial role in providing overmatch capabilities and enhanced lethality to the M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank.”

The consolidation of four legacy rounds to one increases logistical efficiency, simplifies the Abrams basic load, and addresses aging stockpile issues.

The approval of the Full Rate Production Decision underscores the Army’s ongoing commitment to readiness and modernization priorities to ensure Soldiers and International Partners have overmatching lethality today and into the future.
