PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Armaments Center's Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) Office held its Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Certification and Recognition Ceremony on November 26, 2024, at Armaments University.
LSS is a methodology used by the US Army to improve performance, efficiency, and readiness. Six Sigma certification can lead to higher-level roles in quality management, process improvement, and leadership.
11 employees received their certifications as part of the LSS program that is provided by the joint DEVCOM Armaments Center and Joint Program Executive Office Armaments and Ammunition (JPEO A&A) organizations.
The ceremony started with a welcome from Nghi Vo, Chief of the CPI Office, where she then introduced Gregory Roehrich, Acting Director of Enterprise and Systems Integration Center (ESIC) for opening remarks, followed by remarks from Jason Cook, Senior Scientific Technology Manager and Armaments Center Chief of Staff.
“By pursuing LSS training and completing projects to earn your certifications, you have shown a dedication to continuous improvement," Cook told the employees of their achievement. "You have identified a problem or opportunity and applied your new skills and abilities to improving a product or process for the U.S. Army. More importantly, you have taken the time and shown the discipline to also continuously improve yourself.”
Roehrich and Cook were then joined by Col. Kevin Shilley, Armaments Center's Mlitary Deputy, and Stephen Bielamowicz, Chief of Staff JPEO A&A to present the awards to the recipients.
One new Black Belt and 10 new Green Belts were certified, covering six Lean Six Sigma Certification Projects championed by the Armaments Center's Enterprise and Systems Integration Center (ESIC) and Weapons and Software Engineering Center (WSEC).
These projects resulted in a cost avoidance of more than $6 million dollars and led to improved customer satisfaction, reduced risk and schedule delays.
The ceremony also recognized Tiffany Mills for her Black Belt Project that was honored with the Army Civilian Service Commendation Medal - Project 1340, Armaments Center Strategic Roadmap for Autonomous and Semi-Autonomous Armament Systems with integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI).
In addition to the certification projects, four Lean Improvement Efforts were recognized, with teams from ESIC, the Armaments Center's Munitions Engineering Technology Center (METC), JPEO A&A's Project Manager Maneuver Ammunition Systems (PM MAS), and the United States Air Force being honored.
The ceremony concluded with closing remarks from Bielamowicz.
"It is through the combined efforts of managers, sponsors, process owners and black belt mentors that we pursue continuous process and performance improvements and deliver effective, reliable and affordable capabilities to the warfighter," Bielamowicz said. "I thank each of you for your efforts and congratulate all of you in achieving LSS certification."
