On Dec. 13, we will celebrate the United States National Guard’s birthday. For 388 years, the National Guard has served in every major U.S. conflict and has supported American communities during crises.
On Dec. 13, 1636, the first militia regiments in North America were organized in Massachusetts. The militia was divided into three distinct permanent regiments dispersed throughout the colony to defend from invasion. Today, the Massachusetts National Guard units – the 181st Infantry Regiment, the 182nd Infantry Regiment, the 101st Field Artillery Regiment, and the 101st Engineer Battalion share the distinction of being the oldest units in the U.S. Military.
The 325,000-strong National Guard remains a fully integrated part of the Total Army. The Army National Guard has eight divisions, 27 brigade combat teams, two special forces groups, one security force assistance brigade, 44 multi-functional brigades, 58 functional brigades and groups and 14 command and control headquarters. With the unique mission of ensuring Americans are cared for and protected at home and overseas, around 11,000 Soldiers are mobilized stateside supporting domestic operations. They protect our homeland, providing overwhelming support before, during, and after federal emergencies.
To all the Soldiers and Airmen of the National Guard who live or train here – including the 140th RTI at Danner Hall and the Missouri Army National Guard’s 35th Engineer Brigade – we are grateful for you and are proud you are part of our Fort Leonard Wood team.
