This place is impossible to miss - a small house decorated with Christmas decorations and standing near the Church of the Holy Spirit. And what is going on inside? The owner of the house himself is waiting for the children. St. Nicholas is happy to welcome the children, high-fives them, listens to their wishes and poses for photos. There is also no shortage of Christmas treats, which are given by helpers from the Toruń Social Services Center.

In just a few days, like every year on December 6, on St. Nicholas Day, the Municipal Transport Company's Christmas tram will start its first run this season. During the inaugural run, we have prepared surprises for passengers not only on the tram, but also at the St. Nicholas stop.

It is already a tradition that every year on St. Nicholas Day a festive, illuminated tram starts. It is decorated with lights, stars, snowflakes and other festive, shiny and other accents. Inside it is also decorated with garlands and lights, and passengers are accompanied by Christmas songs.

The inaugural run of the Christmas tram will take place on December 6, 2024. Our illuminated tram will start at 3:54 p.m. from the Olimpijska loop and will travel along the route of line no. 1 to the Uniwersytet loop and back . During the first run, passengers will be able to listen to Christmas songs performed by children from the After-School Work Center "Dom Harcerza".

The Christmas atmosphere will be felt not only on the tram, but also at the stop at the transfer hub on al. Solidarności (from the Ethnographic Museum side), where another group of young artists from the Scout House will make the waiting time for the tram more pleasant. You can listen to their recital from approx. 4:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Both on the tram and at the stop, sweet and other surprises as well as warm wishes will await passengers.

The tram will go to the Uniwersytet loop and return to the Olimpijska loop, and after the inaugural run that day it will continue to run on line No. 1.

Nativity scenes from the collections of Czech museums may find in Boleslawiec

At the Ceramics Museum in Bolesławiec we have prepared for you a Christmas exhibition presenting nativity scenes, traditionally made before Christmas in the Karkonosze Mountains in the 19th and early 20th centuries by folk artists of Czech and German origin.

These elaborately made genre scenes are the cultural heritage of this area. Thanks to many years of cooperation with the friendly Museum of the Krkonoše National Park (Krkonošská muzeum) in Vrchlabí and its branch in Jilmenice, you can see the so-called betlemas in Bolesławiec.

If you want to learn about the customs associated with St. Barbara, find out how the weather was predicted for the following year in the Karkonosze Mountains and who brought children Christmas presents, we invite you to visit the museum. During the visit, to the sounds of traditional Karkonosze carols, surrounded by fragrant Christmas trees, which were donated to us by the Bolesławiec Forest District, the State Forests, you can make your own nativity scene-hanger, which will work great as a Christmas tree decoration.

We invite you to visit!

A book printed here 222 years ago has returned to Bolesławiec!

The aforementioned old print was published in 1802 in the first known Bolesławiec printing house, which had been operating for almost three decades at the Royal Orphanage. A few years earlier, the management had built a new building for it, which was later called the Red House due to the characteristic color of the facade. In addition to the printing house, for which a large room in the southern wing was allocated, several research laboratories and a school library were located there.

From the very beginning, the printing house was managed by a pastor, teacher and publicist known in Lower Silesia,  Erdmann Friedrich Buquoi.  Born in 1750 in Sorau, today's Żary, he was one of the first graduates of the orphanage and decided to take up employment there shortly after graduation. In 1802, when his next book was published, he was already deputy director and inspector, sending reports on the activities of his boss, the aged pastor  Christian Ludwig Woltersdorf, to the higher authorities.  As he himself wrote in the introduction, he decided to write a textbook for teachers of technology, which could help them prepare lessons on various technologies and crafts. He also smuggled in his own opinions, writing for example that the best porcelain in the world is made by the Persians and the Chinese, followed by Meissen and Berlin porcelain, and others are not worthy of attention.

What happened next with this book? It's hard to say. At that time, the orphanage's printing house printed mainly for the local market, so the book probably didn't stray too far from Bolesławiec, and it may even have remained somewhere in the city. On the title page, a certain  Weidner signed it , and it can be assumed that he was one of the local teachers. This is evidenced not only by the subject of the book, but also by the fact that his signature is made in a calligraphic style and written in the Latin alphabet, not the German neo-Gothic typical of that time.

Shortly after World War II, Buquoia's book ended up in Kalisz in circumstances that are not fully explained. At that time, Bolesławiec was part of the "Recovered Territories", from which everything of any value was being taken away on a mass scale. The almost 150-year-old book could have been considered by someone to be just such an item... It was a time of mass looting, the flourishing of the black market, and everything German was treated as if it belonged to no one. In any case, someone was found to take the Bolesławiec old print to Kalisz and eventually it became part of a larger collection belonging to one of the local families.

Today, the Red House is the seat of the 3rd Public High School in Bolesławiec (former Oxpress), and the former printing house serves as a relaxation area for students with couches and a billiard table.
