JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. – The Army from Joint Base Lewis-McChord is riding a three-game win streak after last year’s 35-28, triple-overtime, flag-football win over the Navy at JBLM's Cowan Stadium. Still, the Navy leads the series 14-9.

This year’s Army-Navy flag football game takes place at Lumen Field in Seattle Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. The game will be played before the Seattle Seahawks vs. Arizona Cardinals game in Glendale, Arizona, and that game will be shown live on the stadium screens after the flag football battle. While tickets are free, you still need to sign up for tickets via https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2024-army-vs-navy-flag-football-game-watch-party-tickets-1090137563799.

Here’s a look back at JBLM’s current streak.

Dec. 8, 2023 – Tight end Drew Buchhaas caught a perfectly-placed fade route in the end zone as the Army defeated Navy 35-28 in a thrilling, triple overtime tilt at JBLM’s Cowan Stadium.
Nov. 19, 2022 – JBLM’s Frederick Scott, 17th Field Artillery Brigade, had a monster game for the Army, scoring two touchdowns along with three interceptions on defense leading the Army to a 24-15 win at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor
Dec. 10, 2021 – With just 3.3 seconds left in the game, JBLM’s Michael Urban, with the 1st Multi-Domain Task Force, kicked a 38-yard field goal and booted the Army to a 3-0 win over the Navy at JBLM’s Cowan Stadium. The win ended a 7-year losing streak for the Army in the series.

HOW IT STARTED

The Army-Navy flag football series started in 2000 to coincide with the Army-Navy college football game. The Army team, since the joint basing of 2010, is made up of players from the Army and Air Force on JBLM. The Navy is made up of Sailors and Marines from Naval Bases Kitsap, Everett and Whidbey Island.

Otis Sistrunk, a former JBLM sports director, started the flag football series in 2000. Sistrunk, a former Marine, played for the NFL’s Oakland Raiders from 1972 to 1978, winning Super Bowl XI in 1976 against the Minnesota Vikings. He retired from JBLM in 2014.

“They called me (Nov. 28) and told me the game was going to be at Lumen Field,” Sistrunk said, from his home in Columbus, Georgia. “I think that is something that is going to be very nice for everyone. A lot of people are really going to enjoy this opportunity.”

Even with his Navy roots from the Marine Corps, Sistrunk said he’ll still be rooting for the Army in the Dec. 8 game.

“I hope they (JBLM) kick their butts.”

THE OTHER GAME

The other Army vs. Navy football game takes place Dec. 14 at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. This year will be the 125th meeting of the two military academies. The Navy leads the series, that started in 1890, 62-55-7.

After last year’s 17-11 win, the Army is riding a two-game win streak in the series.
