In 1863, Abraham Lincoln established Thanksgiving as a national holiday in a proclamation entreating all Americans to “heal the wounds of the nation” at the height of the Civil War. Today, Americans now celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, a time to express gratitude for blessings. This Thanksgiving season, we hope each of you can spend time with loved ones, thankful for the liberty and freedom we enjoy in America.
We recognize that this time of year can be difficult for some. It is paramount that every leader – military and civilian – talks to and knows their teammates. Know their plans, whether remaining local or taking leave. Provide resources and guidance aimed at avoiding high risk behavior and accidents and remaining safe and well.
Whether driving, riding, or flying, Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of year to travel. Talk to your teams about being aware of surroundings; vehicle inspections; having a travel plan including weather awareness and adjustments; and maintaining a vehicle safety kit. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting above average rain this November. If you approach a low water crossing or any flooded roadway, “turn around, don’t drown”, and ensure you and your family’s Alert! contact information is up to date. Always engage safety belts and ensure all in your care do the same. Alcohol adds risk to every activity. Never drive under the influence, drowsy, or distracted.
Whether cooking, doing yard work, or decorating early for the holidays, practice basic household safety and remain focused on the task you are completing. Kitchen fires and injuries sustained through Christmas decorating are the number one reasons for emergency room visits during this time of year. Utilize safe practices with electrical and motorized equipment, devices, and ladders, and never use any while distracted. In any situation this weekend, do not be afraid to ask for help.
We hope our team has an enjoyable holiday weekend with family and friends and everyone returns to duty safely and well rested. We are very proud to serve with you!
