With little fanfare, Army Career Counselors and Retention Non-commissioned Officers (NCO) keep the Army rolling along by helping retain Soldiers who might otherwise leave the service. Within 7th Signal Command (Theater) (7SC(T)), that mission can be very difficult because Signal and Cyber skills are in high demand on the civilian side.
Against all odds, though, the 7SC(T) Retention Team met and exceeded their goals for Fiscal Years (FY) 2024 and 2025, despite having fewer team members and resources than in previous years. This is the first time they have achieved 100% mission success in (at least) 6 years—a major achievement.
The 7SC(T) Retention Team consists of 6 Career Counselors, 1 full-time Retention NCO, and 22 Retention NCOs performing this function as an additional duty at the Company level. This team of 29 supports the retention function for a nationwide (and global) command with over 1,000 Soldiers.
This year, the Team achieved 102% of their goal for retaining Soldiers whose term of service was scheduled to end in FY2024, and 106% of their goal for retaining those scheduled to exit in FY2025. Even more impressive, every brigade and battalion also met or exceeded their individual goals.
With this year’s outstanding performance, 7SC(T) also moved up two places (to #13) in the Sergeant Major of the Army’s retention competition for the first time in memory.
“This is a huge accomplishment that belongs to the retention teams, the leadership—both military and civilian—and of course the Soldiers and families,” MSG Daniel Vasquez, 7SC(T)’s Command Career Counselor. “They were all involved in creating the momentum the Retention Program has had this year.”
MSG Vasquez made it clear the key to this year’s success was the tireless work of 7SC(T)’s Career Counselors. “I’m extremely proud of our Career Counselors within the Command. Their motivation and drive sparked the fire we needed this year,” he said.
