United Kingdom of cinema in Poznań
From November 13 to 17, a new film festival will take place in Poznań - the British Film Festival. It will be an opportunity to see carefully selected productions, meet foreign guests, take advantage of accompanying events and many other attractions.
“In Poznań, we already have festivals such as Animator and Off Cinema. Now, the British Film Festival will join this group. This shows that we really take the issue of cinematography in our city seriously,” said Jędrzej Solarski, deputy mayor of Poznań. ”I am convinced that the new festival will gather a large group of recipients and will interest not only regular visitors to Kino Muza.”
The British Film Festival will be held under the slogan "United Kingdom of Cinema". It is the first film festival in Poland and one of the few in Europe devoted entirely to British cinematography. The program celebrates the culture of the individual countries that make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Participants will also learn about the diversity of regions and social classes and the context of colonial and post-colonial countries.
“Even though this is only the first edition, we see great potential in this idea, resulting not only from the wide achievements of British film culture, but also from its very interesting development in recent years,” says Dorota Reksińska from Kino Muza, programmer and originator of the British Film Festival. “We think of the festival as a flagship event in Poznań and one that has huge prospects for development in the coming years with new contexts, a film competition and new partnerships.”
Top-class retrospectives
The key points of the event will be film retrospectives presenting the history and present of British cinema. One of them will be based on the work of Alfred Hitchcock. Screenings of films from digitally restored copies will show the director's early work made in Great Britain. The audience will have the opportunity to take part in a screening of the silent film "The Tenant" with live music. There will also be a screening of "The Birds", which will take place in an unconventional space, outside the cinema, in atmospheric candlelight. In addition, "Psycho", "Dial M for Murder" and "North by Northwest" will be shown.
The second retrospective will be devoted to Lynne Ramsey, a Scottish director, winner of many awards, currently working on films with Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore, Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara. In addition to cult productions from her portfolio, such as "We Need to Talk About Kevin" and "You Were Never Really Here", short film adaptations and lesser-known full-length films from the beginning of her career will also be shown. The director will visit Poznań in person and meet with the festival audience during screenings and special events.
Variety of sections
The "First Things First" section will offer pre-premiere screenings of films that are often shown outside of regular distribution, making them the first or only screenings in Poland. The audience will see "Last Swim", which won the Crystal Bear award at the Berlinale 2024. The "High Season" will feature the most interesting examples of British films that were shown in cinemas in the 2023/2024 season. The "Classics" section is a treat for fans of cult and classic British productions. Participants will be able to watch, among others, "Trainspotting" by Danny Boyle, shown at a special screening at the TAMA club, which will be accompanied by a thematic music event.
The program in the "Mind the Gap" category focuses on films of social realism, typical of British cinematography. The audience will see both historical perspectives and contemporary examples of representation of the trend. Among the productions commenting on the past and present political and social situation in Great Britain will be shown: "My Beautiful Laundrette" directed by Stephen Frears with one of the first roles in the portfolio of Daniel Day-Lewis, and "Made in Britain" by Alan Clarke with a teenage debutant Tim Roth in the role of a brutal skinhead.
Heritage cinema, referring to the landed, aristocratic, imperial and colonial traditions of Great Britain, will be presented in the "Five o'clock" section. Films of this genre are costume dramas that recreate the atmosphere and climate of the past with panache and nostalgia. The audience will see Hugh Hudson's "Chariots of Fire", which won four Oscars. Late in the evening, there will be screenings in the "Bloody Hell" section. According to the organizers, these are B-grade films that are terrifying due to their lack of development and threaten to burst with laughter.
The full festival program will be announced at the end of October. Ticket sales for screenings and additional events will also begin then. More information can be found on the event's website .
10 Unusual Attractions at Hempathy Expo and Poznań Beer Fair
Next weekend, November 15-16, it is worth coming to the Poznań International Fair. During these two days, the Poznań Beer Fair and Hempathy Expo will be held there. What have the organizers prepared?
These two days will be a real celebration for all lovers of excellent drinks, delicious food and extraordinary attractions.
Street art exhibition
A novelty during the Poznań Beer Fair will be a street art exhibition. It is a form of visual art created in urban space, which uses public places as its canvas. Street art is increasingly escaping from the streets to salons, and in the hall of the Poznań International Fair during the two days of the PTP you will be able to admire the works of Poznań and other street art creators, as well as buy their stickers, prints or paintings.
Wrestling
Once again, during the Poznań Beer Fair, you will be able to see wrestling. This is an exciting show based on classic wrestling and the so-called free-for-all - here, all holds are allowed. Each fight has different rules, and the whole thing makes for a fascinating show.
Greater Poland Results
Traditionally, the final gala of the Greater Poland competition - addressed to professional and home producers of beer, mead and cider - is scheduled for Friday (November 15, 6:00 p.m.). The best drinks in the above-mentioned categories, selected by a jury consisting of experienced and talented experts from around the world, will be awarded.
Many faces of honey
The Poznań Beer Fair is also a great opportunity to learn something about honey. And it turns out that even the most traditional honey, known to everyone, has many faces. And you will be able to learn more about this during several meetings led by experienced beekeepers and mead makers.
Tattoo artists and barbers
PTP can also be a good opportunity to get your first or next... tattoo. Especially since the decision to get one can be very quick - you won't have to think about your design, but you can use a ready-made design.
Gentlemen who want to take care of their beard or mustache will have at their disposal true masters of their craft, the Przypadek Barberski Collective.
Focus Challenge
There will also be the well-known and popular Wyznanie Ostrości organized by Browar Gryfus. If someone likes expressive cuisine and emotions at the highest level, they should prepare themselves for an exceptional experience. The competition consists of competing in eating various types of spicy peppers or dishes covered in hot sauces. It is not only a test for the taste buds, but also for courage.
Fencing
At the ARMA-PL stand, there will be fencing masters who will teach you how to fight with melee weapons. You will be able to take part in sparring with safe foam weapons, a tournament with attractive prizes or individual lessons with instructors with the melee weapon of your choice. There will also be fencing demonstrations with a long sword, sabre, rapier and others.
Fans of more modern weapons will be able to try their hand at laser tag or shoot with an airsoft gun at the shooting range.
Less typical sports
As every year during the Fair, you can take part in the Beer Mile. The rules are simple: participants run 4 distances of 401m, and before each of them they have to drink a beer of about 300 ml. Of course, the entire run is timed, so it is worth drinking quickly. It is great fun, and everyone who took part in it finished the run with a smile on their face. You can still sign up for the run on the event website
Those who prefer calm forms of physical activity can take part in the Piwna Yoga, already associated with PTP. Just take your glass of beer (non-alcoholic) and join the joint gymnastics combined with a large dose of laughter.
It can also be fun at the Darter Stop - during a game of darts. You will be able to see that hitting the center of the board is not such an easy thing.
There will also be something for real tough guys, namely the next edition of the Harpagan Cup - a strength and fitness competition for real harpagans (ladies are also welcome).
Premieres and more
The Poznań Beer Fair and Hempathy Expo will feature almost 100 exhibitors, including over 50 stands with beers, meads, ciders and other alcoholic beverages.
Breweries are thoroughly preparing for this two-day celebration and, in addition to proven, well-known and popular beverages, they will also serve interesting premieres.
