KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – Soldiers assigned to the 589th Forward Engineer Support Team - Advance, 510th Regional Support Group bid farewell to families and command teams during a deployment ceremony Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, at Daenner Kaserne in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

The 589th is the third 7th MSC unit within the last two years to complete all mobilization training requirements exclusively conducted within the European theater. U.S. Army Reserve Maj. Howard Johnson, the readiness chief for the 7th MSC describes the value provided.

“Typically, U.S. Army Forces Command maintains the responsibility to fill the Combatant Command requirements,” said Johnson. “However, the 7 Mission Support Command is theater assigned to the Army Service Component Command; U.S. Army Europe - Africa, which enables our ability to be forward staged as a U.S. Army Reserve Command, readily available to support the theaters’ rotational requirements.”

With readily available assets, CENTCOM reaps the rewards. Johnson described the role of the 589th for the duration of their deployment.

“This small, advance engineering team rapidly deploys worldwide and provides highly technical engineer support,” said Johnson. “The team can perform critical infrastructure surveys, reconnaissance operations, base camp planning, geospatial operations, and provides construction planning, design and management capabilities.”

U.S. Army Reserve Lt. Gen. Robert Harter, the commanding general of U.S. Army Reserve Command and the Chief of Army Reserve outlined the component’s shift in focus to large-scale combat operations and the requirement to provide ready, equipped units of action to the total force. The 7th MSC plays a role in power projection of ready, Reserve units in the European theater in the event of a crisis.

Johnson underscored the essential nature of the 7th MSC’s mission and capabilities.

“As our motto states, we are ‘Forward and Ready,’ which means as the only U.S. Army Reserve element here in the European Theater, we must be able to support the Combatant Commander’s mission requirements to fulfill some of the capabilities the Army Reserve brings to the fight.
