JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash.— “We are stronger together. A practical quote attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson says, ‘methods are many, words are few; methods always change, principles never do.’ Although we have different methods, we join united in principle,” said Lt. Col. Kip Averett, Deputy to the Joint Base Garrison Chaplain.

The chaplaincy of America’s First Corps and the 62nd Airlift Wing came together for its Chaplain Corps anniversary in a joint celebration at American Lake on Aug. 1, 2024. The event featured family-friendly activities, a barbecue, and a time for prayer, bringing together service members from both branches for a memorable occasion.

The origins of both Chaplain Corps are deeply intertwined with the birth of their respective branches. The U.S. Army Chaplain Corps was established on July 29, 1775, while the U.S. Air Force Chaplain Corps originated on Sept. 18, 1947, when the Air Force became a separate branch from the Army.

Joint operations enhance coordination and communication between services, integrating various capabilities to enable a more holistic approach to strategy. Combining the strengths and specialties of different military branches creates a more versatile and powerful force.

“We want to share this with the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps and the U.S. Air Force Chaplain Corps and show them, ‘Look, we have a best practice here at JBLM. We’re on a joint base, so we’re approaching this from a joint perspective, not doing anything by ourselves,’” said Lt. Col. J.P. Smith, command chaplain for America’s First Corps. “We should never be in a position where we operate alone. Maj. Gen. Fox Conner once said, ‘Never fight unless you have to, but if you do fight, don’t fight long. And if you’re going to fight, never fight alone.’”

As the celebration concluded, participants reflected on the strong bonds forged through collaboration and shared values. The event underscored the importance of unity and the enduring commitment of the Chaplain Corps to support and uplift the men and women who serve.

“Our mission is straightforward but significant, and it is a commitment that will never truly end,” Lt. Col. Smith added. “It’s a continual journey of support, growth, and unity, ensuring we always stand together, no matter the challenge.”

The joint celebration at JBLM not only honored the history and achievements of both Chaplain Corps but also set the stage for future collaboration and continued excellence in serving the armed forces.
