Fort Eisenhower, Ga. – The Department of Public Works (DPW) at U.S. Army Garrison Fort Eisenhower hosted an open house Oct. 31 to showcase newly renovated barracks rooms. This event marked a significant milestone in the garrison's Quality-of-Life project, aiming to modernize living conditions and enhance the well-being of service members.

Soldiers and leadership attended the open house to see firsthand the improvements designed to create a more home-like environment. Based on direct Soldier feedback, each renovation focused on creating a welcoming atmosphere and fostering a sense of ownership.

Sgt. Brenden Caaps, president of the Fort Eisenhower Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program, expressed enthusiasm for the transformation. "Walking into these new rooms is like walking into your own studio apartment," Caaps said. "It's a fantastic change, and I'm excited for Soldiers who will benefit from these upgraded rooms."

Key upgrades include:

  • Modern Flooring: Hardwood or modern carpet for durability and style.
  • Inviting Paint Schemes: Fresh, contemporary colors for a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Enhanced Storage: New cabinets and countertops for organized clutter-free rooms.
  • Lighting Control: Dimmable LED lighting for customizable ambiance.
  • Tech-Ready Upgrades: USB-equipped outlets for convenient device charging.
  • Blackout Curtains: Essential for Soldiers working night shifts, enabling improved sleep quality.

However, the revamped bathrooms, with new cabinets, lighted mirrors, and modern toilets, are a standout feature. Jake Martin, facility manager with DPW Operations and Maintenance Division, emphasized their impact: "The new bathrooms will be the biggest 'wow factor' when Soldiers first walk into the room."

Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Starrett, Cyber Center of Excellence command sergeant major, highlighted the impact on morale and readiness: “Your living conditions make a difference in how well you perform your job,” Starrett said. “These improvements allow our service members to get some good rest, so they’re sharp and focused on the missions.”

The renovated rooms serve as prototypes for future enhancements. While only a portion of rooms have been renovated, these examples demonstrate potential for improved lighting, modern amenities, and fixtures. Following the open house, the two display rooms were returned to the 116th and 513th Military Intelligence Brigades for Soldiers to experience the enhancements firsthand.

Fort Eisenhower's Quality-of-Life initiative aligns with the Army's broader barracks modernization plan, which allocates nearly $5 billion for renovations and new construction across the globe. Fort Eisenhower's DPW has committed $2.5 million annually to renovate 75 rooms per year over five years.

The project was developed with Soldier input, gathered through a quality-of-life council comprised of barracks managers and unit representatives. The council identified approximately 40 desired features, ensuring the outcome truly reflects Soldiers' needs. Martin noted that this collaborative approach allowed DPW to address the most pressing concerns.
