The renovation of the aquatics area of Harney Sports Complex was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 31, 2024, in the complex’s main lobby at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
The area received a facelift, as well as a complete overhaul of major systems.
Tristan Aycock, project manager with ACI Build Group out of Shawnee, Kansas, said many improvements were made, including all new plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems.
“The big plumbing overall was very important because these pipes in here were very old and they didn’t work properly, so (now) everything will work properly, your maintenance crews won’t have to be out here like they were before, which saves a lot of money in the long run.”
The layout was changed, and everything was painted and refinished, as well as new flooring installed.
“The previous condition was very, very outdated, so aesthetically it looks a lot better,” Aycock said.
“I have been told that there is a lot of children that come in this area, for the pool and they have swim meets, so they really wanted something that children would enjoy,” he said, referencing the incorporation of waves into the paint and tile design.
The renovation also included a new office, the addition of an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant family restroom, and the transformation of the pool viewing area and the men’s and women’s restrooms, each with three new showers, as well as saunas in both.
“One of the primary things they were excited about was a new sauna for the locker rooms and then the main driving point was they really wanted to have an ADA-accessible restroom for everybody, and that’s the new family restroom right off the entry,” Aycock said.
Community leaders agreed that the renovation was a success.
“It really looks great — phenomenal job,” Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Director Glenn Hewitt said before the ribbon-cutting ceremony adjourned for tours of the facility.
A few people involved with the renovation project were recognized by Garrison Commander Col. Duane Mosier and Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Vanessa Sun during the ceremony.
“There are so many people that we should thank for this incredible project,” Mosier said. “I can’t stress just how satisfied we are (with the renovation project), how incredible this is.”
