CAMP WALKER, Daegu, South Korea – U.S. Army Garrison Daegu leaders and students from Daegu’s Daebong Elementary School celebrated the graduation of the 3,000th Global Apsan Camp student during a ceremony at the Camp Walker Community Activity Center, October 30.

The program brings students from local Daegu City Elementary and Middle Schools together with Soldiers from the USAG Daegu Headquarters and Headquarters Company for a month of weekly language exchange and cultural immersion events.

Initiated in 2007 in a partnership between the garrison and the Mayor of Nam-gu, the district in Daegu where USAG Daegu is located, the camp provides an opportunity for students to practice English while learning more about life in the military community that shares their neighborhood. Students took advantage of eating in a dining facility, and visiting the fitness center, bowling center and other areas on post.

“To the students who participated in this unique Nam-gu program, I hope that today’s graduation serves as a valuable experience, inspiring you to broaden your horizons and venture into the world,” Cho, Jae-gu, the current Nam-gu Mayor, said.

The program paused in 2020 due to the COVID epidemic, but relaunched in March 2024.

“You might think that you are the ones who get so much from Global Apsan, but we are all richer for the spirit and joy that you bring to us. Thank you,” Col. Dave Henning, USAG Daegu commander, said during remarks at the ceremony.

After the ceremony, students and Soldiers enjoyed a meal, games and a commemorative cakes and cupcakes.

USAG Daegu encompasses three separate base clusters: Camp Carroll in Waegwan, Chilgok County; Camps Walker, Henry and George within the Nam-gu district of Daegu Metropolitan City; and Pier 8 and Busan Storage Center are in Busan. USAG Daegu has the largest footprint in South Korea, encompassing almost half of the country, stretching from Daejeon to Busan. As an enduring hub on the peninsula, it also provides support to the U.S. Navy at Fleet Activities Chinhae in Jinhae and the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Mujuk in Pohang.
