Run & Row 2024 is behind us in Torun

Five rowing eights competed in a spectacular Run & Row race, which took place on the Vistula River and… on the streets of Toruń.

On Sunday, September 29, the eights rowing competitors competed for the sixth time. Five crews took part in the competition for the Toruń Mayor's Cup: AZS Szczecin, Lotto Bydgostia, BTW Bydgoszcz, the Gdańsk team and AZS UMK Toruń. The competitors and fans were welcomed by the deputy mayor of the city, Adam Szponka.

Run & Row is a spectacular run with boats and a rowing race on the Vistula River, ending with a relay on an ergometer. The competitors started from the Old Town Square, from where they ran with boats through the streets of the Old Town complex and Bulwar Filadelfijski to Przystań Toruń (approx. 2 km). There, they had 6 km of rowing on the Vistula and a return through the streets with boats to the Old Town Square. However, this was not the end of the competition - the icing on the cake was the 9x500 m relay on ergometers.

The winner of Rund & Row 2024 was Lotto Bydgostia, who beat AZS UMK Toruń (winners from 2023) and the Golden Boys team from Gdańsk. Off the podium, AZS Szczecin came in fourth, and BTW Bydgoszcz in fifth.

The event was held under the honorary patronage of the Mayor of Toruń Paweł Gulewski, and the organization and course of the competition were overseen by the AZS UMK Toruń club - rowing section.

Violins to play in Toruń

The 6th edition of the Karol Lipiński International Violin Festival and Competition is underway. The strings in Toruń will resound until October 6.

- As residents, we often hear the slogan that Toruń is a city of sports, which is also one of its calling cards. However, after a few months of functioning in the middle of events, I can safely say that Toruń is a city of culture. In fact, there are a lot of great events happening here throughout the season. We have festivals at the national and local level and, as in this case, an international festival and competition. This rich program and invited artists are only proof that we were not the only ones waiting for this festival. A group of young performers who want to show themselves and make a name for themselves were also waiting - says Adam Szponka, Deputy Mayor of Toruń.

- We are pleased that a smaller centre, namely Toruń, is preparing something very valuable, which it shares with the whole world, which is needed and which we want to cultivate for as long as possible - emphasizes the director of the Toruń Symphony Orchestra and the director of the competition, Przemysław Kempiński.

The festival was inaugurated on September 27. The Jordanki stage has already featured, among others, Elias David Moncado, currently a world-famous instrumentalist, winner of the Toruń competition five years ago, and Adam Bałdych - an excellent jazzman, whom we heard in a duet with Leszek Możdżer. Now it's time to start the violin competition. All events are under the patronage of Karol Lipiński (1790-1861), an outstanding violinist and composer who collaborated with Wagner, was friends with Schumann, and when asked who the best violinist in the world was, Paganini replied: "I don't know who the best is, but Lipiński definitely has second place."

Who among the twenty talented violinists will take first and second place in this year's competition? We will find out on October 6. Before that happens, music lovers will be able to watch the performances of the candidates for places on the podium and take part in several other events.

The second stage of the competition will take place on October 1-2. Each day, six participants will perform a recital accompanied by excellent pianists: Bartłomiej Wezner and Radosław Kurek. Compositions by L. van Beethoven, K. Lipiński and other selected pieces will be performed. The first two days of October will also include violin-making workshops, where participants will learn the history of this instrument. Six musicians will advance to the final stage of the competition, who will play concerts with the Toruń Symphony Orchestra on October 3 and 4. We will hear pieces by K. Lipiński, M. Karłowicz, H. Wieniawski, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, J. Sibelius, J. Brahms and L. van Beethoven. The organizers – the Toruń Symphony Orchestra – invite you to the concert of the laureates on Sunday, October 6. The best of the best will play selected violin concertos or parts thereof with symphonists, while Dainius Pavilionis will be the conductor.

Admission to some of the events at the Karol Lipiński International Violin Festival and Competition is free. The program and details are available at www.lipinski-competition.com .
